Layering
A breathable base, adjustable insulation and wind or rain shell cover most UK rides.
- Avoid cotton on cold or remote rides because it stays wet against the skin.
- Carry a packable layer even when the trailhead is warm.
- Vent before a long climb to reduce sweat that later becomes chilling.
Contact points
Hands, feet and eyes often determine whether a ride remains comfortable.
- Use footwear that grips the chosen pedals and remains controllable when wet.
- Gloves should preserve brake feel; clear eye protection helps in mud and low light.
- Test knee and elbow pads for pedalling comfort and secure fit before a long day.
Heat and cold
Conditions on an exposed hill can differ sharply from the car park.
- In heat, carry sufficient water, use sunscreen and reduce effort before symptoms develop.
- In cold, protect extremities and carry a dry emergency layer.
- Turn back early if a rider becomes confused, unusually clumsy, persistently shivery or unwell.
