START RIDING
Confident descending
Develop stable descending through vision, braking, range of motion and conservative speed progression.

Create space
Lower the saddle where appropriate and stand in a balanced position.
- Keep pedals level when not pedalling and allow arms and legs to absorb movement.
- Stay centred enough to steer and use both brakes.
- Relax grip without losing secure control.
Manage speed
Plan braking zones rather than reacting continuously.
- Scan for grippy, straight sections where stronger braking is possible.
- Release enough braking through rough features for wheels to roll and track.
- Stop before steep sections to inspect only from a safe position.
Build exposure gradually
Add one demand at a time.
- Repeat a familiar descent before increasing steepness or speed.
- Use easier lines and walk when consequence exceeds control.
- Finish when arm fatigue or braking consistency deteriorates.
