Family mountain biking

Plan child-friendly rides around confidence, warmth, food and easy escape options—not adult mileage.

Pick the venue

Facilities and route flexibility often matter more than trail reputation.

  • Choose green or traffic-free routes with toilets and a short-loop option.
  • Check minimum ages and equipment rules for hire, coaching or uplift.
  • Avoid exposed, remote routes when weather or energy levels are uncertain.

Size and equipment

A working, correctly sized bike makes learning much easier.

  • Make sure the child can operate both brakes and reach the controls comfortably.
  • Use a certified, correctly fitted helmet; gloves and eye protection can improve comfort.
  • Tow ropes require judgement, communication and a suitable route; never attach them where the manufacturer does not permit.

Manage the day

Keep instructions short and stops frequent.

  • Ride at the least-confident person’s pace and regroup before junctions.
  • Carry more snacks, spare layers and patience than the distance appears to require.
  • End before concentration and temperature fall sharply.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
