Make the scene safer
Avoid creating another casualty.
- Warn approaching riders and move only when remaining creates greater danger.
- Check response and breathing, then call emergency services early.
- Give an accurate location, access route, hazards and casualty count.
Immediate priorities
Use training and dispatcher instructions.
- Control severe external bleeding with direct pressure unless instructed otherwise.
- Keep the casualty warm and monitor breathing and responsiveness.
- Do not give food or drink to someone seriously injured or likely to need urgent treatment.
Head, neck and cold
Symptoms can develop after an apparently minor crash.
- Treat suspected concussion seriously and do not allow return to riding.
- Avoid unnecessary movement where spinal injury is possible.
- Learn hypothermia recognition and carry insulation appropriate to delays.
