Know the cycle
A compliant electrically assisted pedal cycle is treated differently from an unregistered motor vehicle.
- Check that the cycle meets current UK EAPC rules before relying on ordinary cycle access.
- Modified power, speed or throttle arrangements can change the legal classification.
- Venue operators may impose equipment-specific rules even where general cycle access exists.
Range and charging
Range estimates vary greatly with ascent, temperature, surface, rider mass and assistance mode.
- Start remote rides with a conservative range margin and know the bailout options.
- Confirm charging permission; do not assume cafés or accommodation accept bike batteries.
- Use the manufacturer’s charger and follow storage, transport and damage guidance.
Trail behaviour
Extra climbing speed can create unexpected closing speeds.
- Pass slowly and communicate clearly with riders, walkers and horse riders.
- Do not pressure companions into more distance or technical terrain than they can safely complete.
- Brake early: overall mass and repeated descending still affect heat, grip and stopping distance.
