SAFETY AND ACCESS
Winter and night riding
Manage short daylight, cold, reduced grip and lighting without extending beyond a safe margin.
Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information
Lighting
Use a primary light suitable for the speed and terrain plus an independent backup.
- Charge both units and test mounts before leaving.
- Reduce speed because shadows hide surface shape and wildlife or other users may appear late.
- Avoid dazzling other riders, walkers, road users and nearby homes.
Cold and grip
Ice, wet timber and leaf-covered roots can change a familiar route.
- Check forecast temperature at elevation and allow for wind chill.
- Use slower, smoother braking and avoid committing to unseen frozen features.
- Carry a dry layer, emergency insulation and sufficient food.
Venue rules
Some forests and parks close gates or do not permit night access.
- Check opening, parking-locking and event rules before arrival.
- Avoid disturbing wildlife and nearby residents.
- Use a shorter loop with repeated bailouts rather than an ambitious remote circuit.
