Combine the forecast, official trail status and what you observe on arrival before choosing a route.

Three checks
Use information with different time horizons.
- Read the regional forecast and any weather warnings before travelling.
- Open the land manager’s live status page for closures, forestry operations and event restrictions.
- At the trailhead, reassess wind, water, ice, visibility and group comfort.
Ground conditions
Rain affects soils and constructed surfaces differently.
- Respect closures and voluntary requests intended to prevent erosion or rutting.
- Expect roots, timber and polished rock to lose grip before the whole trail looks wet.
- Freeze-thaw can damage soft natural trails; choose durable managed routes when advised.
Change the plan
Good decisions preserve future rides.
- Use a shorter, lower or more sheltered loop when wind and visibility deteriorate.
- Do not enter forestry closure zones even when a familiar trail appears clear.
- Carry an alternative venue or non-riding activity for destination weekends.
