Access note: NRW says tree felling starts on Monday 19 October, with diversions on Beast, Cyflym Coch, Dragon’s Back, MinorTaur and Temtiwr. Follow the signed diversions. The visitor-centre café and shop remain closed; toilets remain available. NRW aims to reopen the centre for the 2027 visitor season once agreements are in place and new operators are ready.
Coed y Brenin’s established trail network gives a woodland riding trip a clear shape: choose a graded circuit from the visitor-centre car park, climb into the forest and return through built singletrack. The range includes blue progression loops, flowing red sections and severe black routes with a very different level of commitment. Rocks are part of the place’s riding character, so the colour beside a trail matters as much as its distance.
The forest sits in Eryri, north of Dolgellau, and supports walking and gravel outings as well as mountain biking. A mixed group can choose separate activities rather than forcing everyone onto the most ambitious loop. The main visitor café and information point are closed, while the trails, toilets and independently operated Beics Brenin shop and hire centre remain available. Bring food for the ride and make a separate plan for an evening meal in town.

MinorTaur
Blue · 3–12 km
A progression route formed from linked loops, allowing a shorter first outing or a longer circuit. Features include rollers, berms and stone steps, with short climbing efforts. The first three loops are suitable for users of adaptive equipment, but route suitability still needs checking against the individual cycle and rider. Agree which loops you are riding before leaving the trailhead.
A natural next decision after mastering MinorTaur, linking flowing sections including Dream Time and Uncle Fester with relatively short climbs. It offers red-grade riding without the full length of Dragon’s Back. The shorter distance makes it a useful first red here, but it remains a technical step rather than simply more of the blue route.
A larger cross-country commitment, starting hard before linking woodland sections and a climb to the forest’s high point. Big Doug passes through tall Douglas firs, and the Adams Family descending sections reward the climbing effort. Choose it when you can comfortably maintain handling and concentration through a long red day, rather than comparing distance alone with Cyflym Coch.
Severe-grade riding that mixes bedrock and loose rocky ground with berms, large rollers and steps. The Cavity is one of its named features, and the operator warns of unavoidable fly-offs. This is a skills-led choice even though its distance is shorter than Dragon’s Back: less mileage does not make a black circuit a gentler alternative.
The long severe circuit combines demanding climbs and rocky descending with constructed features. Pink Heifer and Big Doug provide an extended singletrack stretch beneath the Douglas firs. The published climb makes the physical commitment clear; start with a full-day plan, and keep enough energy for the later descents rather than spending everything on the opening sections.
Use the individual NRW route cards to choose MinorTaur loops or a red or black circuit. Y Ffowndri practice zones sit beside the main start; the full forest is not one uniform grade.
Use Y Ffowndri’s training and graded singletrack zones to judge your comfort before committing to a full circuit. Start MinorTaur with a shorter loop if you are new to the forest, then add distance while control and energy remain good. Adaptive riders should compare the first three loops with the published access information and their equipment needs.
An experienced red rider can start with Cyflym Coch or select Dragon’s Back for a longer day. MBR and Beast are severe routes, with technical demands that do not disappear if you have a powerful e-bike. Treat the freeride and drop-off parts of Y Ffowndri as separate advanced choices; a skills area is not a promise that all its features suit beginners.
Where is Coed y Brenin?
Follow the A470 north from Dolgellau through Ganllwyd, then use the signed visitor-centre turn rather than a no-through road suggested by the postcode. LL40 2HZ is the site postcode. Official directions →
Follow the A470 north from Dolgellau through Ganllwyd, then use the signed visitor-centre turn rather than a no-through road suggested by the postcode. LL40 2HZ is the site postcode. Parking is charged, with contactless payment at the machine or RingGo; the machine does not accept cash. Plan to return and leave the site after riding rather than staying overnight in the car park.
NRW identifies Barmouth and Blaenau Ffestiniog as the nearest mainline stations. Buses from Dolgellau and Blaenau Ffestiniog stop by request at the entrance road on the A470. That still leaves the approach to the trailhead, so confirm the stop, connection and bicycle carriage before arranging hire around a public-transport arrival.
Beics Brenin remains open for bike hire, equipment sales and workshop services despite the main visitor café closure. Its range includes e-bike hire, and coaching is available through the operator. Book the correct size and confirm return arrangements before selecting a longer loop; a late arrival should not automatically become a rushed Beast day.
The main site lists toilets, showers and bike wash. The visitor centre is unstaffed and has no first-aid provision, so carry repair essentials, food and water and know how to raise help. Y Ffowndri includes graded practice zones and a jump/pump track; use the appropriate zone and read its grade before joining another rider’s line.
Bike hire at Coed y Brenin
Beics Brenin operates the independent bike shop and hire service, including e-bikes. Arrange size and collection with the hire team; the main visitor café closure does not mean this separate business has closed.
NRW lists year-round trail access subject to operational and weather closures. Parking is charged and accepts contactless or RingGo; the machine does not accept cash. The main visitor café is closed.
The trails are open throughout the year, but weather can change access and riding conditions. The rocky surfaces require restraint in the wet, and ice or snow is a reason to reassess the whole outing. NRW warns that the approach road and car park can be icy and that trails are not treated. Keep a shorter route available instead of forcing the planned distance when grip or daylight is poor.
Dolgellau is the useful town base for meals and accommodation after leaving the forest. The Royal Ship in Queens Square offers pub food and table booking, giving you a concrete evening option when there is no trailhead café to rely on. Confirm bike storage with your accommodation and set dinner time around the full ride, packing up and the journey back.
For a non-riding outing from the centre, follow the Afon Eden walking trail to the riverside picnic area. The accessible route passes woodland and tactile sculptures; an audio guide about wildlife and forest history can be downloaded beforehand. Choose that walk for companions seeking a smaller outing, while treating longer forest walks as their own plans.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
No. The café and visitor information point are no longer operating. Toilets remain open, and Beics Brenin continues to run its separate bike shop and hire centre.
Can I shorten the MinorTaur ride?
Yes. Its linked loops allow outings from 3 km up to the full 12 km circuit. Decide which loop combination suits the group before starting.
Does a shorter black route make an easier day?
No. MBR is shorter than Dragon’s Back but severe grade, with unavoidable features. Choose by handling ability as well as distance and climbing.
Which parts of MinorTaur suit adaptive equipment?
NRW identifies the first three loops as suitable for adaptive equipment. Check the detailed route information against your cycle, dimensions and individual needs before travelling.
Can I hire an e-bike even though the visitor café closed?
Yes. Beics Brenin remains open and advertises e-bike hire. Book with the bike operator and confirm the practical arrangements separately from the closed café.
