Choose the first ride

Start with a managed green route or skills loop where navigation is simple and features are avoidable.

  • Check distance as well as grade; an easy long loop can still be tiring.
  • Look for parking, toilets, food, bike hire and a shorter fallback route.
  • Avoid making a wet, remote or uplift day your first introduction.

Before leaving the trailhead

A two-minute check prevents many avoidable problems.

  • Squeeze both brakes, check tyres, secure both wheels and lower the saddle for descending if appropriate.
  • Carry water, a snack, a layer, phone, tube or repair plug, pump and the correct wheel tool.
  • Tell someone the route and expected return time when riding away from a busy centre.

Progress well

Control and consistency matter more than speed.

  • Repeat easy corners and braking zones before moving up a grade.
  • Walk any feature without embarrassment and never follow another rider blindly.
  • Book an accredited coach if braking, cornering or body position is limiting confidence.
