Adaptive mountain biking

Questions to ask venues about trail width, gradients, gates, transfers, equipment and recovery support.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Ask for usable detail

Adaptive suitability depends on the complete journey from arrival to return.

  • Confirm gate widths, cambers, pinch points, steps, gradients and turning space.
  • Ask about accessible parking, toilets, changing, charging and firm transfer areas.
  • Check whether the venue has inspected the route using equipment comparable to yours.

Equipment and support

Hire stock and recovery arrangements vary widely.

  • Reserve adaptive equipment and confirm rider measurements well in advance.
  • Ask whether a companion, instructor or venue induction is required.
  • Agree a recovery plan for mechanical trouble or an inaccessible section.

Plan conservatively

Weather can change the effective width and difficulty of a trail.

  • Check current surface conditions and closures directly with the operator.
  • Carry equipment-specific tools and know battery or assistance range.
  • Use specialist organisations and local adaptive riders for current first-hand knowledge.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
