Mountain biking in the South Downs means chalk-ridge journeys on the South Downs Way, valley rail paths and bridleway rides near Lewes. Choose a Hampshire or Sussex start to suit your day. The classic South Downs Way cycling route connects Winchester and Eastbourne, with Devil’s Dyke, Ditchling Beacon and Firle Beacon among its named ridge sections.
Take the cycling variant through Jevington at the eastern end; Seven Sisters is the walking branch. For mapping, the South Downs Way uses OS Explorer OL32 Winchester, OL8 Chichester, OL10 Arundel & Pulborough, OL11 Brighton & Hove and OL25 Eastbourne & Beachy Head. The wider National Park set adds OL3 Meon Valley and OL33 Haslemere & Petersfield. Select the sheets covering your actual route.

Ride a chosen stage of the Winchester–Eastbourne cycling route: the River Adur–River Ouse stage crosses Devil’s Dyke and Ditchling Beacon, while the next reaches Firle Beacon and Alfriston. The listed eastern stage distance is for Alfriston–Eastbourne through Jevington, over Windover Hill and Willingdon Hill. Use the cyclist branches at Exton and Jevington, with a planned return; do not follow the walkers’ Seven Sisters branch.
Hampshire County Council promotes this car-free trail for cycling and other users. West Meon has a trail car park off Station Road. An out-and-back ride offers a practical introduction: choose the turnaround according to the group’s energy, leaving enough for the return.
The former railway route links Chichester, Lavant and West Dean, with an extension towards Cucumber Farm. Further connections towards Cocking remain a project; do not assume an uninterrupted completed link to the South Downs Way. Share this route carefully with walkers and wheelchair users.
This published Falmer-to-Lewes ride combines ridge bridleways with a River Ouse approach. The route notes warn about a steep rutted chalk descent and the busy A275 crossing at Offham. It needs more care than the distance alone suggests, particularly after rain.
Ridge, River and Wet Woods is a linear Falmer–Lewes route. For the full South Downs Way, use the cycling variant via Jevington rather than the cliff-top walking line.
Begin with a railway-path outing or one defined South Downs Way cycling stage. Map the start, finish and return, and agree where the group can shorten the day. A ridge section with a complicated transport connection needs more planning than a short out-and-back; choose the route before booking the journey.
Confident off-road riders can choose the named Falmer-to-Lewes ride. Its Medium rating is the publisher’s description, not a blue trail-centre grade. Ruts, steep descents and road crossings need their own judgement. Walk anything beyond your control.
Use permitted bridleways and other cycling routes when adding connections. In England, a public footpath does not provide the same cycling right as a bridleway, and open-access land is not blanket permission to ride. Respect signs and temporary diversions. When meeting walkers or horse riders, slow early, make your presence known calmly and allow room for a comfortable pass.

The Falmer-to-Lewes itinerary is linear, so establish how you will return before leaving the start. A route website mentioning train travel does not reserve a place for your bicycle or guarantee boarding at a busy time.
For Meon Valley Trail, use the council’s listed West Meon starting point and respect local parking restrictions. For a longer South Downs Way trip, allow for the climb from a village accommodation base back to the ridge each morning. A bed that appears close on a map may add effort and time; include those connections in the day’s total, not as an afterthought.

Facilities
There is no single reception, rescue vehicle or workshop serving the entire region. Carry drinking water, food, repair essentials and a usable offline map for the ride you have chosen. Identify resupply points individually and confirm their opening if the plan depends on them. Leave enough flexibility to continue safely when a hoped-for café stop is unavailable.
At Seven Sisters Country Park, the permitted valley-floor concrete route provides a separate cycling option towards the beach, and the visitor area has cycle racks and a bike station. Cuckmere Cycle Company supplies hire from the park, including some equipment for additional mobility needs. Discuss the rider, route and availability directly; that offer does not make the cliff-top footpath cycle-accessible.

Wet chalk deserves respect. The official Exploring The Bottoms itinerary specifically warns that chalk can become slippery, while the river section of Ridge, River and Wet Woods can be muddy after rain. Reduce speed before a descent and choose a shorter outing if braking or grip is uncertain. Avoid widening a route by riding round soft patches through sensitive grassland.
On a ridge ride, pack for a stopped rider as well as a moving one. Wind, rain and fading daylight can change what feels like a manageable distance. Keep an exit option, a charged phone and someone’s knowledge of your intended route. If planning several days, avoid a schedule that forces a long exposed stage simply because the next bed is already booked.
The South Downs Eco Lodge at the Sustainability Centre near East Meon offers a western overnight option on the South Downs Way, with separate bed-and-breakfast and hostel accommodation. Its Beech Café serves vegetarian and vegan food. Consult its current hours and arrange meals around your arrival; do not assume every overnight booking includes an evening restaurant service.
In the eastern Downs, Southease offers access to YHA South Downs and the railway, while Alfriston has village accommodation near the eastern cycling section. For companions, Seven Sisters Country Park offers a separate valley outing. Agree transport and meeting times before the rider leaves: a walking group and a cyclist taking the Jevington variant should not expect to follow the same route.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
Can I cycle the South Downs Way over Seven Sisters?
The South Downs Way walking branch over Seven Sisters is not the cycling route. Cyclists must use the inland variant through Jevington to Eastbourne. Cycling is separately permitted on the valley-floor concrete track within Seven Sisters Country Park.
Are these routes graded like a trail centre?
The region does not have one unified green-to-black grading system. Ridge, River and Wet Woods has the publisher’s Medium difficulty rating, which is not a blue trail grade. Read the surface, road-crossing and climbing information for the actual itinerary.
What is a sensible first ride with children?
Consider a short out-and-back on an established shared railway route, with the turnaround decided by the least confident rider. Keep enough energy for the return and slow around walkers. The whole South Downs Way is not a necessary first family objective.
Does Centurion Way already join the South Downs Way?
The park’s supporting trust describes further connections towards Cocking as planned work. Use the current published route and signs; do not rely on a future extension when preparing a through-ride.
Can I arrive by train with my mountain bike?
Some featured routes use station connections, including Falmer, Lewes and Southease. Confirm the current operator’s bicycle policy and the services you intend to use. Allow another return option when a fixed train connection is essential to the day.
