Access note: Summer Lightning is closed along its entire length according to the official Surrey Hills notice. Do not ride it unless the land managers announce reopening.
From Peaslake, ride the Hurtwood’s permitted bridleways and forest tracks towards Pitch Hill and Holmbury Hill, or build a wider outing through Farley Heath and Winterfold. Woodland climbing, sandy tracks and viewpoints give this riding region its character. Friends of the Hurtwood allows cycling on bridleways, byways and forest tracks, with walkers, dogs and horses sharing the network.
Choose a mapped circuit with a clear return to Peaslake. OS Explorer 146, Dorking, Box Hill & Reigate, and adjoining Explorer 145, Guildford & Farnham, cover the wider area; match both sheet boundaries to your intended ride. Routes are independent countryside outings with no common trail-centre grade. Summer Lightning at Leith Hill remains closed in the official update: use the open permitted network instead.
Surrey Hills (Peaslake): classic mountain bike routes
Pitch Hill: permitted bridleways and forest tracks
Pitch Hill is a named Hurtwood destination with a viewpoint above the surrounding countryside. Build a ride using permitted tracks and mapped bridleways, keeping the descent within your ability. Surrey Hills publishes a separate Pitch Hill walking circuit; its existence is not permission to cycle the whole walk. Do not transfer that walking distance or its directions into a mountain-bike route.
Surrey Hills publishes this named circuit for horse riders, with bridleways through farmland and Winterfold Forest, sandy heathland and lane connections. Cyclists can use the public bridleway and road sections, linking into Hurtwood’s permitted forest tracks. Follow blue bridleway signs through Winterfold and allow for gates and traffic. Match every connection to the map; an equestrian route sheet does not establish bicycle permission on an uncertain connector.
This official waymarked multi-user route connects Box Hill and Leith Hill, with Denbies Wine Estate another published starting point. It is a separate wider-area option, not a nine-mile Peaslake loop. Expect exposed roots, sand, mud and some steps, with challenging climbing towards the Tower. Carry the official route information and plan your return; choosing an out-and-back adds distance beyond the published one-way route.
Summer Lightning is the formally named Leith Hill mountain-bike route in the official Surrey Hills update. That notice says the entire route is closed and must not be ridden. It discusses assessment and possible future reopening without confirming an opening date. Do not plan a descent here or take a familiar-looking entry as evidence that the closure has ended.
The Hurtwood visitor map identifies separate car parks and hills in permissive shared woodland. It is an orientation map, not a graded trail-centre circuit map.
Begin with a modest circuit on the permitted tracks around Pitch or Holmbury Hill, returning to Peaslake. Retain Holmbury’s historic earthworks and neighbouring vegetation by staying on the established line. Download your route and Explorer mapping before travelling. Allow time at junctions, where different paths can lead away from your planned return.
Ride the first descent slowly enough to judge braking and grip. Leave space within a group, especially before bends or steep ground, and stop somewhere that does not block the path when discussing the next junction. If you cannot identify a legal continuation, retrace a known permitted line. Local riders can offer useful context, but following someone is not a substitute for knowing where your own route goes.
Where is Surrey Hills (Peaslake)?
Choose a designated visitor car park using the current Hurtwood visitor information and its map before the journey. Keep village driveways, narrow roads and passing places clear while unloading. Official directions →
Choose a designated visitor car park using the current Hurtwood visitor information and its map before the journey. Keep village driveways, narrow roads and passing places clear while unloading. Park considerately, leave room for other visitors and take rubbish home. If the intended parking area is full, use an appropriate alternative instead of extending parking onto verges or across access points.
If approaching the wider area by train, plan the onward journey separately. The National Trust lists Holmwood, Ockley and Dorking as stations for Leith Hill, with road connections that include local traffic. Those are not direct train arrivals in Peaslake. Allow for riding on lanes as well as off-road terrain, and arrange bike space with the railway operator when your chosen service requires it.

Facilities
Surrey Hills Bike Rental operates in Peaslake and offers mountain bikes and electric mountain bikes. Reserve the correct size and discuss the intended outing with the operator, especially if this is your first off-road hire. Its website requires identification and the payment card used for the booking. Read those conditions before travelling; a confirmed bike reservation still needs the correct collection documents.
Carry water, food and essential repair equipment into the woods. Village services are useful before and after a ride but do not turn every woodland junction into a staffed base. At Leith Hill, the National Trust identifies a drinks and snacks kiosk beside the Tower. There are no toilets at the Tower; toilets at Leith Hill Place depend on house opening. Plan breaks around the facilities actually on your selected route.
Bike hire at Surrey Hills (Peaslake)
Surrey Hills Bike Rental is a verified local hire option. Reserve directly and agree collection and return arrangements before travelling.
Shared woodland riding demands restraint when the ground is soft. Choose firm permitted tracks, avoid skidding and leave vulnerable sections alone instead of widening them around puddles. Adjust the planned circuit to the weather and available daylight. A shorter ride can preserve both grip and the path surface; the objective is to come home with energy for another visit.
Friends of the Hurtwood forbids building trails or features without its sanction. Do not alter a line, move material into a jump or cut a new shortcut. Take particular care around wildlife and follow local seasonal restrictions. Announce your approach to other visitors, pass slowly and give horses ample room. Quiet, considerate riding protects the shared access that makes this area worthwhile.
Camping and places to stay near Surrey Hills (Peaslake)
A base in Peaslake / Dorking
Peaslake works well as a meeting point when the whole party is riding the Hurtwood. Non-riders can explore the village or plan a separate permitted walk; they should not have to guess which distant hill you are approaching. Arrange food and accommodation directly, including any bicycle storage you need.
For a separate Leith Hill visit, the National Trust’s visitor page describes the Tower, house and countryside options with distinct opening arrangements. Tower access should never be assumed from a planned cycle ride. Keep walking visits separate from riding lines, and use the published visitor information when organising a mixed day for companions who want views and time away from the bike.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
No. Treat it as a base for a wider riding region, with independently planned routes across shared countryside. The permitted Hurtwood network includes bridleways, byways and forest tracks.
Can I ride Summer Lightning?
The official Surrey Hills notice says the entire route is closed and should not be ridden. A future reopening is being discussed, but no confirmed opening date is given there.
Are all lines on cycling apps permitted?
No. An app records routes and activity, not necessarily permission. Use official access guidance and signs, and avoid footpaths or cycle-prohibited tracks even if the map suggests continuing.
Can I hire an electric mountain bike in Peaslake?
Surrey Hills Bike Rental advertises electric mountain-bike hire in the village. Reserve the size and collection time, and read its identification, payment-card and booking requirements.
Can I use the Pitch Hill walking circuit as a bike route?
Do not assume so. The published circuit is a walk. A riding route needs its own permitted connections, with any footpath sections excluded unless cycling permission is expressly provided.
