Introduction

High Lodge offers several different kinds of forest cycling from one base between Brandon and Thetford. Families can follow broad green-grade tracks, improving riders can try blue singletrack, and experienced mountain bikers have a red circuit with harder features nearby. The distinction matters more than the gentle-looking landscape: relatively flat family riding and severe technical pits belong to the same destination, but require very different decisions.

The forest’s visitor facilities make it particularly useful for groups whose interests or confidence levels differ. You can split between a ride, a walk and time around the central visitor area, then meet for food. Choose a named waymarked route rather than improvising between forest tracks. Current start-point changes and diversions also make the signs on the ground more useful than memories from an earlier visit.

High Lodge, Thetford mountain bike trails and grades

Shepherd Trail

Green · 8 km; 5.5 km shortcut

A relatively flat route on wide gravel forest roads, tracks and trails, suitable for beginners and family cycling. Forestry England permits trailers, tag-alongs and child seats here. The shortcut is useful for keeping a family outing manageable. Its starting point moved in July 2025, so follow the present signs.

Beater Trail

Blue · 10 km short loop; 18 km long loop

Singletrack winds through the trees with roots, rocks and sweeping berms. This is a worthwhile step for riders with basic off-road skills who want a challenge. Choose the shorter loop before committing to the longer distance. The start is diverted for utility works, rejoining after Tightrope, until March 2027.

Lime Burner Trail

Red · 16 km

The current route webpage gives 16 kilometres; the January 2026 map labels it 15. Plan for approximately sixteen kilometres of red riding, with crests, dips, bomb holes, drop-offs and rock features. Good technique and endurance matter. The severe pits encountered nearby are separate choices, not a requirement to prove you can ride the red route.

Mountain bike pits and features

Black

Severe features are scattered around the forest, with most encountered near Lime Burner. Large, committing features can be unavoidable once you enter a pit, so inspect the line and exit before choosing it. These areas demand expert skills and a suitable mountain bike, rather than confidence gained from a smooth blue lap.

Pedal and Play

Green with blue sections · 1.9 km

A short cycling adventure with three progressively harder challenge sections. Its manageable length offers a different learning day from the longer forest circuits. Use the easier line first and add a challenge only when the rider is ready, rather than treating every section as compulsory.

Pump track

Blue

A skills loop with rolling features and tightly bermed corners. It is a useful place to practise generating momentum through body movement instead of repeated pedal strokes. Give yourself a clear run, keep the pace controlled and watch how the loop is being used before joining other riders.

Best first ride

For a novice or a group using child seats and trailers, start with Shepherd and its shortcut option. Riders ready for their first singletrack circuit should consider Beater’s shorter loop instead. The routes solve different needs: moving from green to blue introduces narrower riding and obstacles, not simply a different distance. Take time at the trailhead to agree which outing suits the least confident person.

Experienced riders can build a day around Lime Burner, allowing time to inspect any black pit they might choose. Beater’s longer loop offers another way to spend time riding between the trees without stepping up to severe features. Choose between distance, technical practice and accompanying a learner.

Seasons and weather

Expect wet roots and rocks on the singletrack to require more restrained cornering than the broad Shepherd tracks. The site stays open through the year except Christmas Day, but opening hours shorten to a 4pm finish from late October through winter. Plan the return accordingly. Summer holidays and bank holidays are particularly busy; a weekday visit can make practising or organising a mixed-ability group easier.

Camping and places to stay near High Lodge, Thetford

A base in Thetford

High Lodge Café provides hot snacks, light meals and drinks without leaving the forest. Use it as a meeting place after different routes, or take a picnic if you want a flexible break. The site asks visitors to take picnic rubbish home. Eat before the longer circuit; there is no promised halfway café.

The Heritage Trail gives non-riders a proper forest outing: the full circular walk is 4.2 kilometres, with one- and three-kilometre alternatives. A firm surface, regular seating and two shelters make it suitable for many wheelchair users and buggies. Interpretation explains the landscape’s history beneath the trees. Choose a walking loop that matches your companions’ pace and arrange your meeting back at the visitor area.

Frequently asked questions

Can trailers use every High Lodge cycle route?

No. Shepherd is suitable for trailers, tag-alongs and child seats; Beater and Lime Burner explicitly are not. Pick by the equipment and riders in your group, not just by the advertised kilometres.

What is happening at the Beater start?

Utility improvements divert the beginning until March 2027, with the route rejoining after Tightrope. Use the signed diversion instead of attempting the old start.

Are there additional October event restrictions?

The official diversion page lists cycling-event restrictions across 16–18 October 2026, with some pages specifying the 17th and 18th. Lime Burner is substantially shortened, while Beater and Shepherd have diversions. Use the event map for those dates.

Must I ride the black pits on Lime Burner?

No. They are optional expert features located around the red route. Inspect before entering: once on a severe line, large features may be unavoidable.

Is bike hire available at High Lodge?

Yes, the on-site hire service operates seven days a week. Book ahead and bring the identification requested by the operator; allow collection time before starting your route.
