BIKE AND KIT
Choosing a mountain bike
Choose a bike around fit, terrain and maintainability instead of fashion or maximum suspension travel.
Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information
Start with the riding
List normal trails before comparing specifications.
- Hardtails are simple and capable for many green, blue and cross-country rides.
- Full suspension adds control and comfort on rougher ground but also cost and maintenance.
- Long-travel gravity bikes can be tiring and unnecessary for gentler everyday routes.
Fit before features
Geometry labels do not replace a test ride.
- Check reach, standover, saddle adjustment and comfortable control access.
- Compare complete-bike weight and handling, especially for young or smaller riders.
- Budget for pedals, helmet, spares, setup and an early safety service.
Buy support
Parts availability matters after the first ride.
- Prefer standard serviceable components and a shop able to support the bike.
- Check warranty, crash replacement and suspension service arrangements.
- For e-bikes, investigate motor, battery and diagnostic support locally.
