Confirm identity
Start with provenance rather than components.
- Ask for the frame number, original receipt and seller identification before meeting.
- Check theft registers and be cautious of removed numbers or an implausibly low price.
- Use a traceable payment method and retain a written sale record.
Inspect carefully
Cleanliness can hide as much as mud.
- Look for cracks, dents, paint disturbance and play around the frame, fork and pivots.
- Test both brakes, every gear, wheels, bearings, dropper and suspension.
- For carbon or e-bikes, consider a specialist inspection and diagnostic report.
Price the repairs
Wear items can transform the apparent bargain.
- Cost tyres, drivetrain, brake pads, rotors, bearings and suspension service.
- Check proprietary parts remain available.
- Do not ride technical terrain until the bike has passed a safety check.
