Wales · REGIONAL RIDING GUIDE
North Wales and Eryri offers enough variety for several separate riding holidays, so choose a cluster rather than attempting every location in one weekend. Forest-centre loops at Coed y Brenin and Coed Llandegla, uplift downhill at Antur Stiniog and pedal-powered red riding at Penmachno and Gwydir each imply a different day. Easier woodland and reservoir choices also give mixed groups a reason to visit. Match the accommodation and route style to the people travelling, then add a contrasting outing only when the journey and recovery fit.
Coed y Brenin provides blue MinorTaur loops spanning three to twelve kilometres, followed by the 12.6-kilometre red Cyflym Coch or much longer 30-kilometre red Dragon’s Back. The 17.6-kilometre black MBR and 35-kilometre Beast demand greater technical confidence; a shorter black is not an easier substitute for a red. Dolgellau is the useful town base. At Coed Llandegla, approximately five kilometres of green reservoir-side riding contrasts with the 12-kilometre blue and 18-kilometre red. Its black options make a combined 21-kilometre red-and-black outing, rather than a separate gentle extension.
Antur Stiniog changes the emphasis to booked uplift riding above Blaenau Ffestiniog. The two-kilometre green Plug and Feathers gives a different starting point from red Wildcart, black Black Powder or double-black Re-Powder. Penmachno is a contrasting pedal-powered forest adventure: red Dolen Machno is 18.6 kilometres, with Dolen Eryri an 11.4-kilometre extension. Gwydir Bach is a 9.1-kilometre red and Gwydir Mawr a 24.8-kilometre red. Choose those lengths for stamina as well as handling, leaving supplies and return time within the plan.
The gentler choices are distinct destinations too. Coed Nercwys offers a 3.8-kilometre green cycle circuit near Mold. Coed Moel Famau’s 12.4-kilometre blue Ffrith Mountain Circular introduces a longer Clwydian Range outing with climbing and views. Beddgelert’s forest-road Bedwen and Derwen circuits measure 5.9 and ten kilometres, making scenery and sustained pedalling the focus. On Anglesey, Newborough’s 7.8-kilometre Bike Quest and 9.9-kilometre Corsica route use forest-road grading; nature panels and shared riding give a different rhythm from a technical singletrack day.
Alwen adds reservoir scenery, but its closed footbridge means Alwen Trail and Two Lakes Trail currently work as permitted out-and-back rides, not their nominal full circuits. The other current restrictions also shape destination choice: Coed Llandegla’s practice areas are closed during harvesting; Penmachno and Gwydir use forestry diversions; Beddgelert’s optional Lôn Gwyrfai connection is diverted. Newborough’s access road is closed on weekdays until 16 October, with weekend access retained. Coed y Brenin’s main café and information point are closed, while toilets and Beics Brenin remain available. Read the current official notices once for your selected locations before fixing the regional itinerary.
LOCATOR MAP
North is at the top. Pins show the trail area or nearby planning base, not a route or emergency-navigation map.
Planning coordinates combine official operator, council and land-manager sources with earlier OpenStreetMap place matching (ODbL). Pins show approximate areas or nearby bases. Use official arrival directions.

Choose Dolgellau for Coed y Brenin, Blaenau Ffestiniog for an Antur-led visit, or Llanrwst for the Gwydir side of the Conwy Valley. Beddgelert supports a forest-and-village outing; Mold and Llangollen serve different eastern riding plans, while Newborough belongs to an Anglesey stay. Compare the actual route from accommodation instead of treating this large region as one compact trail hub.
Named meal options include the Royal Ship in Dolgellau, the Eagles Hotel in Llanrwst, the Corn Mill in Llangollen and the Saracens Head in Beddgelert. A Penmachno group can arrange food at the Eagles around its published Friday and Saturday evening service. Secure bike storage, carried ride food and an achievable return matter more than fitting every centre into a short break.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN
Choose MinorTaur or a red circuit matched to the group. Make the selected loop the day’s objective and arrange the evening in Dolgellau.
Use booked Antur Stiniog downhill for a discipline-focused day, or choose Beddgelert’s forest-road circuits for a gentler scenic outing. These are alternatives, allowing the group’s preference to shape the trip.
Build a separate final day around suitable red riding at Gwydir or Penmachno using the signed available route. Select one venue and leave enough time for the onward journey.
Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
