Introduction

Beddgelert Forest is a place for a scenic pedal through Eryri rather than a search for jump lines or severe singletrack. Two waymarked cycle circuits, Bedwen and Derwen, use forest roads and similar surfaces, with Llyn Llywelyn providing a natural pause. Mountain views give the outing its character, and the Welsh Highland Railway passes through the wider forest. The appeal is in settling into the climb, enjoying the surroundings and returning with energy for the village.

The published grade for both circuits is forest road and similar, which describes the riding more honestly than assigning them an easy green colour. They still involve climbing and variable surfaces. Families already comfortable cycling can choose a shorter objective, while stronger riders can extend the day with permitted connections. Treat Beddgelert as a trail centre with a defined forest network; the surrounding mountain landscape does not make these routes an open-hill expedition.

Beddgelert Forest mountain bike trails and grades

Bedwen Cycle Trail

Forest road and similar · 5.9 km · 179 m

The shorter circular option includes a lake stop and a worthwhile amount of climbing. Use it for a measured first outing, leaving room for a picnic rather than riding straight past the main reason to pause.

Official route information →

Derwen Cycle Trail

Forest road and similar · 10 km · 297 m

The longer circuit tours the northern forest with steady climbing, views towards eastern Eryri and a return past the lake. Plan for sustained pedalling rather than technical downhill laps.

Lôn Gwyrfai

7 km one way

This National Park multi-use route connects Rhyd Ddu and Beddgelert through the forest. It is separate from the two cycle circuits, and a current diversion affects part of it. Add a return or arranged transport.

Bedwen and Derwen are waymarked forest-road loops from the public car park, with Derwen extending farther through the northern forest.

Best first ride

For a new visitor, Bedwen offers the clearer starting choice when the group wants forest scenery without the longer commitment. Compare its published climb with what everyone normally rides before setting off. Give the least confident rider a say in the pace and the length of the lake break. Being on wider tracks can help a group stay together, but it does not remove the work of riding uphill.

Experienced riders can choose Derwen for more distance and sustained climbing, or use a village approach along the permitted multi-use connection. Keep that extension separate in the distance budget. A circuit plus a ride back to town is more than the number on the forest trail panel. This is a good setting for an endurance or social ride; choose a different destination if your main objective is berms, jumps and repeated technical descents.

Where is Beddgelert Forest?

Beddgelert Forest is reached from Beddgelert. Use LL55 4UU alongside the official entrance directions. Official directions →

NRW places the forest north of Beddgelert and recommends following its directions rather than relying on the broad LL55 4UU postcode. Take the A4085 towards Caernarfon, pass the Forest Holidays entrance, then take the signed track towards the forest car park. Parking is free, with overnight parking prohibited. Use the public trail parking rather than assuming the holiday accommodation entrance is the correct start.

Porthmadog is the nearest mainline railway station identified by NRW, which links to Traveline Cymru for onward travel. Eryri also identifies bus and heritage-rail options between Beddgelert and Rhyd Ddu. Confirm the service and bicycle arrangements before making a one-way ride depend on them. A heritage train passing through the forest is part of the setting; it does not establish a guaranteed bike shuttle to the trailhead.

Facilities

Expect a forest session based around parking, waymarked trails and picnic opportunities. NRW says there are no staff at the location. Bring water, lunch and essential bike supplies so the group can enjoy the lake break without needing a service stop. Read the start panel before riding and keep the route information available at junctions. A planned pause by the water is particularly useful when the outing includes both riders and walkers.

Derwen is included in NRW’s information for users of adaptive equipment, with an official film to help people assess its suitability. Review that film alongside your own equipment and the route’s climb before choosing it. An inclusion in that programme is useful planning information, not a promise that every cycle or rider will find the whole circuit effortless. For toilets, National Trust identifies public facilities in Beddgelert near the village bridge.

Seasons and weather

The forest-road category allows for loose, uneven or muddy ground, variable gradients and shared use. After rain, allow more time for the climbs and descend at a speed that leaves room to meet another visitor or a vehicle. Views towards the mountains may be lost in cloud, but the lake still provides a clear destination. Carry a layer for stopping there and shorten the plan if cold weather makes a long picnic unappealing.

Give the return as much attention as the outward ride in shorter daylight. An extension towards Rhyd Ddu can be attractive, but the current Lôn Gwyrfai diversion must fit your navigation plan before you add it. Forest roads and waymarkers provide a defined outing; follow those rather than turning a scenic circuit into an unplanned mountain excursion.

Camping and places to stay near Beddgelert Forest

A base in Beddgelert

Beddgelert village is the natural place for a meal after the forest. The Saracens Head on Caernarfon Road lists a bar and restaurant, offering a possible sit-down stop once the bikes are packed. Contact the venue for food service and availability rather than assuming the kitchen follows the bar’s hours. Leave the forest with enough time to enjoy the village without making the final descent a race to a meal booking.

For a non-riding activity, National Trust’s Gelert’s Grave walk follows the River Glaslyn from the village and explores the famous legend. The published circular walk is 1.6 kilometres, with a suggested forty minutes to an hour. It is a separate walking outing rather than another bike route to add to the circuit. That makes a manageable shared activity for companions who want local history and riverside scenery after the forest visit.

Frequently asked questions

Are Bedwen and Derwen green MTB trails?

NRW grades both as forest road and similar. Use that category and their published climbing figures when judging suitability rather than assuming a green singletrack experience.

Which circuit is shorter?

The current destination page lists Bedwen at 5.9 km with 179 m climb, and Derwen at 10 km with 297 m climb.

Can I ride from Beddgelert village?

Lôn Gwyrfai is a multi-use connection through the forest. It currently has a diversion, so use the National Park’s alternative-route map and include your return.

Is overnight parking allowed in the forest?

No. NRW states that daytime parking is free and overnight parking is prohibited. Arrange accommodation separately from the public trail car park.

Where can I assess Derwen for an adaptive cycle?

NRW publishes an inclusive-cycling film for Derwen. Review it against your own equipment, the climb and current access information before choosing the circuit.
