Mountain biking in East of England

The East of England pairs two different riding experiences: the long forest circuits at High Lodge, Thetford, and the technical Olympic-course choices at Hadleigh Country Park. Choose the contrast deliberately. High Lodge works well when your group wants a sustained woodland ride with clear distance options; Hadleigh makes a more focused day around marked features and skills. Neither needs to be treated as a compulsory extra stop on the same day. Give each destination its own place in the trip, leaving room for a meal and a relaxed finish.

At High Lodge, the green Shepherd Trail is 8 km with a 5.5 km shortcut, on relatively flat gravel roads and tracks. The operator permits trailers, tag-alongs and child seats here, making it the useful starting point for family cycling. Pedal and Play supplies a different introduction: its 1.9 km route combines green riding with progressively harder blue challenge sections. Those choices let younger riders build confidence without joining a longer technical circuit just because another member of the family wants more distance.

The blue Beater Trail adds roots, rocks and berms, with published 10 km and 18 km loops. Its start is currently diverted for utility works until March 2027. Lime Burner is the red option: plan for approximately 16 km, as given by its current route page, while the January 2026 map labels it 15 km. Crests, dips, bomb holes and drop-offs change the demands from the Shepherd’s broad tracks. The separate black pits involve more committing features and should be assessed independently, rather than included automatically in a red lap.

Hadleigh’s adapted Olympic course is divided into blue, red and black choices. Blue is the easiest technical-course option, which is different from saying that the whole course is an introductory family path. The flatter multi-use paths provide a separate plan for less confident companions. Hire, coaching, the pump track and skills facilities give the destination a practical progression focus. Select the level that matches the rider’s control, and let a repeat of a suitable option count as a worthwhile session instead of chasing every harder feature.

For a two-day trip, start at High Lodge with the route that suits the whole group, then use Hadleigh for a contrasting technical day. A third day can repeat High Lodge’s blue riding or make a gentler forest outing after demanding course practice. High Lodge Café and Hadleigh’s Hub Café give each visit a clear meeting point. Non-riders can choose High Lodge’s 4.2 km Heritage Trail, with shorter alternatives, or visit the ruins of Hadleigh Castle above the estuary. Choose accommodation around the destination where you intend to spend most time, rather than making every morning a transfer. Check the current official notices before finalising the two-centre trip, including High Lodge’s additional event restrictions across 16–18 October 2026.

Rendlesham gives Suffolk riders a clearly marked woodland day from Tangham. The F.I.D.O trail follows brown waymarkers for 16 km across road, gravel, sand and grass. Forestry England classifies it as Forest Road riding, with no implied green or blue trail-centre grade. Choose it for steady exploration and a manageable shared-path outing, pacing the full circuit for the least experienced rider and allowing time for pauses across the changing surfaces.

Where to base yourself

Compare stays around Thetford for a forest-focused break, or Hadleigh and Benfleet for a course-focused visit. For a touring trip, organise the overnight plan around your onward journey without assuming these centres share one trailhead base. Ask about secure bike storage and equipment drying before booking.

Use High Lodge Café or the Hadleigh Hub Café as daytime reunion points after different activities. The Hub is cashless and has its own serving hours. Plan breakfast and an evening meal separately from the ride so a longer Beater lap does not become a race back to a café table.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN

A suggested riding trip

Day 1

A woodland introduction at High Lodge

Choose Shepherd’s green 8 km route or its 5.5 km shortcut for a family day. Riders with established off-road skills can choose the shorter Beater loop using its signed diversion. Meet at the visitor area after the different rides.

Day 2

Technical choices at Hadleigh

Use a suitable blue option or the flatter multi-use paths according to the group. Established riders can select marked red features individually. Make the Hub Café the meeting point and leave time for a separate Hadleigh Castle visit.

Day 3

Optional second forest day

Return to High Lodge for a familiar blue loop or a gentle Shepherd ride. A companion can choose the Heritage Trail while the riders pedal, giving the day a distinct walking alternative. Make the signed F.I.D.O circuit a Suffolk forest day, carrying enough food for its full distance. Set a steady group pace and use the visitor area for a rest before considering a repeat outing.

Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
