Phoenix Bike Park in Kentford, Suffolk, combines short practice lines with a longer lap built around flowing features. The operator divides the venue into Shop Side and North Side, giving a first visit a useful structure: settle into the easier practice areas, then explore the routes that suit your control and confidence. Beginners, experienced jump riders and families can all find a purpose for the day without riding the same features.
The attraction is repetition. You can spend a session learning how a particular corner or roller feels, return to it with a clear aim, and finish with a more consistent technique. There is no need to make the largest jump the measure of success. Phoenix welcomes small bikes and balance bikes, but a family visit still needs a plan for supervision, breaks and keeping younger riders in the appropriate part of the park.

Shop Side Skills Area
Begin with the operator's dedicated skills area on Shop Side. It is the natural place to establish braking and balance before committing to a longer line. Choose one manageable feature, watch how the riding area works and leave enough space between attempts. Small improvements are easier to recognise when you repeat the same task.
The official trail description identifies riding specifically designed for little bikes. Keep the adult's attention on the child and the shared space, especially when a mixed family group arrives together. Agree where older siblings may ride and how everyone will meet again; the youngest rider's break should be part of the itinerary.
The North Side lap includes Northshore obstacles and a wooden wall ride, with bypasses around every obstacle according to the operator. Inspect the route at an unhurried pace and use those alternatives freely. Passing an obstacle on the bypass is a sensible way to learn the circuit before deciding which features match your skills.
These are the two named jump lines associated with Phoenix Lap. Treat each approach and landing as a separate decision. Familiarity with one jump does not establish readiness for the next, and pressure from another rider is a poor reason to change a riding plan. Follow the park's grade guide and current signs.
Shop Side has beginner, skills and balance-bike areas. North Side includes the two-kilometre Phoenix Lap and specialist jump features. Choose each line from its signs.
Choose a single aim for the first session: controlled turns, pumping or becoming comfortable on a short section. Bring a maintained bike and a properly fitted helmet. Learn the route and its return before increasing speed, and take breaks while concentration is still good. Watching a confident rider can help explain the line, but their approach speed and airborne technique may be unsuitable for your own first attempt.
Coaching can give the day a clearer direction. Phoenix offers individual and group sessions as well as children's coaching. Arrange the session directly and build the remaining riding around its timing. A useful question for the coach is what to practise after the lesson, so the rest of the visit reinforces one or two points. Leave time for a gentle warm-up and avoid arriving with an ambitious itinerary already fixed.
Where is Phoenix Bike Park?
Use Bury Road, Kentford, Newmarket CB8 7PZ. Parking is free; sign in at the kiosk beside Brink. Official directions →
Save the official directions before travelling and leave time to unload safely. Organise bikes and clothing clear of vehicle movements, and put valuables somewhere secure before the group leaves the parking area.
Go to the sign-in kiosk beside Brink when you arrive. Phoenix accepts payment on the day and requires a waiver from every rider; completing the paperwork beforehand can simplify a family arrival. Display the issued wristband as instructed. An adult supervising a rider under 16 must remain on site, even when the adult is not riding. Make that responsibility clear before splitting the party between different areas.

Facilities
Discuss the intended riding and equipment with Brink when reserving a hire bike. Confirm sizing and what protection accompanies the booking, particularly if several children need rentals for the same session.
Shop Side also has café refreshments. Plan a break that allows tired riders to stop before another run becomes hurried. Carry water for the riding itself, and ask about food requirements directly when organising a longer visit. North Side includes mulch jumps and an airbag with access through a valid riding pass. Use the park's instructions for those specialist features; access does not mean every visitor is ready to use them.
Bike hire at Phoenix Bike Park
Brink, the on-site shop, manages bike hire. Reserve the required size before travelling.
April–October trails open 9:30am–5:45pm; November–March 9:30am–3:45pm. Car parks open 9am and close at 6pm or 4pm respectively. Every rider needs a waiver; weather closures apply.
Read the latest operator updates before setting out and finish within riding hours. A shorter winter session can concentrate on familiar features; do not turn a late arrival into hurried attempts on increasingly demanding lines.
Assess the riding surface on the day. Familiar berms and take-offs can feel different after rain or under changing temperatures, so begin with another gentle inspection even on a return visit. Follow closures and signs immediately. If concentration or grip is deteriorating, move back to simpler practice or finish the session. Learning when to stop is part of making repeated park visits worthwhile.
Newmarket provides an overnight base for a Phoenix visit. The nearby-stay shortlist includes actual accommodation such as Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa and Best Western Heath Court Hotel, both in Newmarket, alongside other local choices. Compare the location with your approach to Kentford and the next day's plans. Ask the property directly about bicycle storage and arrival arrangements before choosing a room.
Keep a second riding day flexible until you know how the first feels. Pack dry clothing and arrange somewhere appropriate for muddy kit with your accommodation. For non-riding companions, agree meeting times and supervision before planning separate activities.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
The operator welcomes beginners and has a Shop Side skills area and trails for small bikes. Start there, follow the grade guide and consider coaching before moving to more demanding features.
Must I book riding in advance?
Phoenix accepts walk-in payment and waivers at its kiosk. Reserve bike hire or coaching separately if the visit depends on either, and read current opening updates before travelling.
Can children ride without a supervising adult?
Riders under 16 need an adult over 18 to remain on site. The adult does not have to ride, but supervision must be arranged before the group separates.
Can I bring an e-MTB?
The operator permits compliant pedal-assist e-bikes and says there is no additional e-bike riding charge. Throttle-actuated e-bikes are not recommended or accepted under the park's stated rules.
Do all Phoenix Lap obstacles have alternatives?
The official trail page says every obstacle on Phoenix Lap has a bypass. Use those options while learning the circuit and decide on individual features only when they suit your ability.
Develop braking, cornering, climbing and technical riding through deliberate practice, with sensible progression for roots, rocks, steeps, wheel lifts and jumps.
