England · REGIONAL RIDING GUIDE
Yorkshire’s directory combines major forest circuits, escarpment cycling, a city bike park and technical woodland riding. It is more useful to choose a cluster and a riding purpose than to expect every location to share the same character. Dalby and Sutton Bank can support a countryside trip with mixed abilities; Guisborough supplies a defined blue circuit; Leeds Urban Bike Park concentrates progression around its hub. Stainburn and Wharncliffe ask for a different approach, centred on technical judgement rather than an uncomplicated family loop.
Dalby offers a broad choice of distance and commitment. Ellerburn’s shared easy-access options are 2.8 and 4.5 kilometres, while green Adderstone has 12.9- and 19.3-kilometre variants and includes a road section. Blue Jubilee covers eleven kilometres with a steep zigzag descent towards the finish. The 34.3-kilometre red route is a substantial cross-country objective; the 6.4-kilometre black UCI World Cup trail is shorter but physically and technically demanding. Pick the start and route as a pair rather than assuming every option leaves from the same courtyard.
Sutton Bank gives a different landscape and a useful family starting point in its 2.5-kilometre figure-of-eight cycle trail. Green Cliff Trail follows the escarpment setting, while blue Fort offers short and long choices. The shorter Fort option avoids the larger ascent and descent of the longer version. Drovers extends blue riding, and red Paradise belongs to an experienced rider’s wider cross-country plan. At Guisborough, the 7.2-kilometre Blue Lake Cycle Trail starts at Pinchinthorpe and uses mainly forest roads and tracks with steady climbs. It makes a clear moderate outing with a separate town visit afterwards.
Leeds Urban Bike Park offers green, blue, red and expert black trails alongside pump, BMX skills and jump areas. The hub makes it practical to regroup when riders are choosing different levels. Treat the BMX feature scale separately from the mountain-bike colours, and choose harder lines deliberately. Stainburn’s two-kilometre red Norwood Loop provides a short introduction to its riding, but the one-kilometre Descent Line meets a black climbing connection. Black Warren Boulder adds narrow rocky singletrack; its three kilometres describe intensity rather than a long tour.
Wharncliffe’s challenging natural riding is neither officially waymarked nor maintained as a named loop. No published colour, distance or ascent should be invented to make it look comparable with Dalby. That makes navigation and line inspection part of the actual outing. Choose Pickering for a Dalby meal base, the Sutton Bank centre for a café meeting, Leeds for a city progression day, or Harrogate for Stainburn and a separate Harlow Carr visit. Guisborough’s priory and Wharncliffe Heath walking give companions their own objectives. Read the official location notices before travelling for the latest route and access arrangements.
Lady Canning’s Plantation adds two community-supported blue trails on Sheffield’s Houndkirk Moor edge. Blue Steel is a 1.4 km sequence of berms, rollers and drop-offs; Cooking on Gas offers a further flowing descent and connection through shaped turns. A first visit works best as slow reconnaissance followed by repetitions on a suitable line. Keep the plantation’s signed returns separate from the surrounding moorland paths, and let control determine the next lap’s pace.
The Yorkshire Dales add substantial natural cross-country days to a Yorkshire stay. The National Park’s 16 km Settle Loop mixes limestone tracks, grass and climbing, while the longer 36 km Settle itinerary includes Mastiles Lane and Malham. In the north, the Swale Trail runs 20 km between Reeth and Keld, with a gentler middle section. Choose a complete circuit or an achievable out-and-back, keeping one-way mileage separate from the return plan.
The North York Moors offer railway-path riding, forest gravel and exposed upland circuits within the same destination. The Moor to Sea stage from Scarborough to Ravenscar follows the Cinder Track for 16.9 km one way. Gribdale Gravel Explorer provides an 11 km climbing circuit near Roseberry Topping, while Blakey and Fryup is a demanding 50 km day from Danby Lodge. Match the route and return arrangements to the group’s experience.

Planning coordinates combine official operator, council and land-manager sources with earlier OpenStreetMap place matching (ODbL). Pins show approximate areas or nearby bases. Use official arrival directions.

For a Dalby and Sutton Bank plan, decide whether Pickering or the Thirsk side better suits the main riding day. The White Swan in Pickering supplies a named meal stop, while In the Wilde at Sutton Bank provides an on-site café meeting. These options do not imply one trailhead is beside the other.
Keep Leeds Urban Bike Park, Harrogate/Stainburn and Grenoside/Wharncliffe as distinct base choices when those are the main objectives. Arrange secure storage with your accommodation and use a specific meeting point for companions. Guisborough offers a town meal and priory visit after Blue Lake, giving that forest its own worthwhile day.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN
Select Jubilee Blue for a confident moderate group or make the full red route the main experienced-rider objective. Families can choose an appropriate easy-access or green option, accounting for Adderstone’s road section. Meet in Pickering afterwards.
Choose Sutton Bank’s family trail, Cliff or an appropriate Fort option for a day around the centre. Alternatively, use Guisborough’s Blue Lake circuit and a priory visit. These are separate day plans.
If your onward journey suits Leeds, use the bike-park hub for a measured session at the right grade. Riders staying near Harrogate can choose Norwood Loop at Stainburn instead, planning the return connection before any descent. Plan a shorter Sheffield session at Lady Canning’s: take a sighting run on Blue Steel, practise consistent braking and corner exits, then use Cooking on Gas for another measured flow-trail choice. Choose the Settle Loop for a contained Dales introduction, or a short Swale Trail out-and-back for a gentler valley day. Save the longer Mastiles Lane itinerary for riders ready for a substantial natural outing. Begin with a manageable Cinder Track out-and-back or the compact Gribdale Gravel Explorer. Experienced groups can reserve Blakey and Fryup for a separate longer day with suitable weather and a full return plan.
Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
