Dogs and mountain biking
Decide whether a venue, route, dog and rider can safely share the same outing.

Check permission
Bike parks and trail centres may restrict dogs on riding trails or uplift vehicles.
- Read the venue’s current dog policy before travelling.
- Follow seasonal restrictions around livestock, nesting birds and forestry work.
- Use a lead wherever signs, law or reliable control require it.
Protect the dog
Dogs do not pace heat and effort like riders.
- Build distance gradually and avoid heat, abrasive ground and repeated high-speed descents.
- Carry water and inspect paws for cuts or wear.
- Do not attach a lead to a bike unless using a suitable system in appropriate terrain.
Protect other users
Even friendly dogs can cause crashes.
- Keep the dog out of landings, blind corners and trail queues.
- Slow and secure control before passing horses, children or nervous dogs.
- Remove waste and never leave bags beside the trail.
