START RIDING

Front-wheel lifts and manuals

Develop controlled front-wheel movement for trail obstacles without turning practice into uncontrolled looping out.

Prepare safely

Use a suitable bike and open practice area.

  • Lower the saddle, inspect the surface and keep others clear.
  • Cover the rear brake and practise using it to bring the front down.
  • Wear appropriate protection and avoid attaching feet before release is automatic.

Create movement

Use body movement and timing rather than only pulling the bars.

  • Compress into the bike, then move rearward while extending through the front.
  • Keep arms long enough for the bike to move and eyes forward.
  • Return smoothly with rear-brake control rather than slamming the wheel.

Apply carefully

Trail use requires accurate timing.

  • Begin by clearing painted lines or very small obstacles.
  • Do not practise in traffic, queues or active trail lines.
  • Use coaching before attempting manuals at speed or near drops.
