Before departure
Describe the ride precisely enough for informed consent.
- State grade, distance, climbing, pace, technical features and likely duration.
- Collect relevant emergency contacts and access needs lawfully and discreetly.
- Set equipment requirements, regrouping rules and cancellation criteria.
On the route
Use a leader and back marker when group size warrants it.
- Count riders after junctions, descents, stops and mechanicals.
- Regroup away from trail exits and never leave one rider to navigate alone.
- Change the plan when weather, timing, equipment or confidence deteriorates.
Incidents
Pre-agreed roles reduce confusion.
- Protect the scene, assess the casualty and call for help early.
- Keep the remaining group warm, informed and safely positioned.
- Record and report incidents according to club, insurer or land-manager procedures.
