Around livestock
Behaviour changes with young animals, dogs and confined spaces.
- Follow signs, close gates as found and avoid separating animals.
- Slow down, remain calm and use the established route.
- Keep dogs under effective control and release them if threatened by cattle when official advice says to do so.
Passing horses
Make your presence known without shouting suddenly.
- Slow to walking pace or stop, speak calmly and follow the rider’s request.
- Give generous space and avoid freewheeling noise or sudden movement.
- Wait where the path is too narrow for a safe pass.
Group responsibility
One poor pass affects access for everyone.
- Pass calls through the group and prevent riders surging forward.
- Regroup away from gates and livestock handling areas.
- Report damaged gates or escaped animals to the appropriate land manager.
