START RIDING
Loose-surface riding
Adapt speed, braking and body movement for gravel, dust, loose rock and deep trail debris.

Recognise the layer
A thin covering over hard ground behaves differently from deep loose material.
- Scan for marbles of gravel, dust over rock and pushed-out corner edges.
- Choose intended lines with visible support and a usable exit.
- Reduce speed before entering an uncertain surface.
Stay smooth
Abrupt braking and steering use grip quickly.
- Brake progressively while upright and release enough to let tyres track.
- Keep the body responsive while allowing small bike movement.
- Avoid sudden lean or acceleration where the surface is moving.
Protect the trail
Skidding removes material and control.
- Do not lock the rear wheel for style or rotation.
- Stay on the established trail rather than widening around loose patches.
- Respect dust, fire-risk and maintenance closures.
