START RIDING
Mountain-bike braking technique
Build controlled, progressive braking that preserves grip and leaves attention available for the trail ahead.

Set the controls
Reliable technique begins with reachable levers and working brakes.
- Position levers for a relaxed wrist and secure one-finger operation.
- Check pad life, rotor condition and lever bite before practice.
- Use both brakes progressively rather than treating the front brake as forbidden.
Practise modulation
Grip changes as weight and surface change.
- Use a safe open area to feel the point before either wheel locks.
- Increase pressure smoothly, release slightly when grip falls and keep vision ahead.
- Repeat at low speed before adding gradient.
Apply on trail
Separate speed control from difficult steering where possible.
- Brake before corners, roots and feature entries, then carry controlled speed through.
- Lower heels and keep the body centred rather than hanging behind the saddle.
- Finish or seek coaching if panic braking remains common.
