START RIDING

Rocks and rock gardens

Use vision, wheel placement and movement to cross rocky sections without fixating on every obstacle.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Inspect the consequence

Not every rock section is safely rollable.

  • Identify mandatory drops, gaps, pedal traps and the run-out.
  • Check whether an easier signed line exists.
  • Do not stand in the section or move rocks.

Ride the section

Look for connected spaces rather than isolated threats.

  • Set speed and gear before entry.
  • Keep pedals level where strikes are likely and remain mobile.
  • Use braking zones between rocks instead of locking wheels on top of them.

Progress

Begin with short, low-consequence clusters.

  • Practise front-wheel placement and level-pedal movement separately.
  • Repeat clean lines before adding speed or length.
  • Use a coach for larger steps or sustained severe terrain.
