START RIDING
Riding roots
Approach roots with suitable speed, relaxed movement and reduced abrupt braking—especially when wet.

Approach
Root angle and moisture determine much of the difficulty.
- Look for the cleanest intended crossing and the landing surface beyond.
- Set speed before the roots and align the bike where possible.
- Keep pedals clear of high roots and hidden stumps.
Roll through
Allow the wheels to move.
- Keep arms and legs responsive rather than rigid.
- Use light, controlled inputs and avoid grabbing brakes on polished roots.
- Maintain enough momentum to prevent stalling without entering recklessly.
Wet roots
Grip can change dramatically before surrounding soil looks difficult.
- Reduce speed and lean, and increase crossing angle where the intended line permits.
- Use lower-consequence practice sections.
- Walk when a slide would carry the rider into a dangerous consequence.
