- Check road classification, speed environment, gradients and major junctions.
- Identify legal traffic-free alternatives without assuming footpaths permit cycling.
- Review daylight, weather and likely fatigue on the return leg.
Prepare the bike
Road legality and visibility still apply to mountain bikes.
- Use legally compliant lights after dark or in poor visibility.
- Secure loose equipment and ensure tyres and brakes suit the link.
- Carry a lock if shops, stations or cafés are part of the plan.
Ride predictably
Communicate early and avoid sudden movements.
- Follow the Highway Code and use appropriate road position.
- Do not ride as an intimidating group or block traffic unnecessarily.
- Walk a short section if a junction or surface exceeds a rider’s confidence.
