START RIDING
Steep trail technique
Approach steep climbs and descents with deliberate inspection, braking zones and room to move.
Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information
Steep descents
Keep braking control and steering authority.
- Inspect entry, gradient changes, grip and run-out from outside the line.
- Lower the saddle and remain centred rather than locking arms behind the bike.
- Use progressive braking while wheels can still rotate and track.
Steep climbs
Balance smooth power with front-wheel direction.
- Choose gear and line early.
- Move forward enough to keep the front wheel placed while preserving rear grip.
- Dismount before balance is completely lost.
Build safely
Gradient and consequence should not rise together at first.
- Practise on a wide slope with a clean run-out.
- Add roughness only after speed control is reliable.
- Seek coaching for braking fear or repeated loss of position.
