Reduce tick exposure
Ticks are easier to see on light clothing.
- Use suitable repellent and cover skin when riding or stopping in long vegetation.
- Check the body, children, pets and clothing after the ride.
- Remove an attached tick promptly with a proper tick-removal tool.
Know the warning signs
Not every tick bite causes illness, but symptoms deserve attention.
- Seek NHS advice for an expanding circular rash or flu-like illness after a bite.
- Record when and where the bite probably occurred.
- Do not cover a tick with substances intended to suffocate or burn it.
Other countryside risks
Simple habits prevent many problems.
- Use sunscreen and carry adequate safe drinking water.
- Wash hands before eating and avoid drinking untreated surface water.
- Check current livestock, algae, fire and public-health notices.
