SAFETY AND ACCESS

Water crossings

Assess depth, flow, bed, exit and environmental impact before riding or walking through water.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Assess first

Conditions can change rapidly after rain.

  • Check official route notices and weather upstream.
  • Look for depth, current, hidden holes, slippery bed and a secure far-bank exit.
  • Use a bridge or turn back when the crossing is uncertain.

Cross conservatively

Only enter when safe and permitted.

  • Select a low gear and steady line before entry.
  • Keep pedals clear where possible and avoid abrupt steering.
  • If walking, consider whether current can destabilise rider and bike together.

Afterward

Water can affect equipment and ecosystems.

  • Test brakes progressively after immersion.
  • Clean and inspect drivetrain, bearings and e-bike components according to maker guidance.
  • Do not create new bankside approaches or spread invasive material between waters.
