START RIDING

Young riders and safeguarding

Plan age-appropriate riding with clear supervision, consent, communication and recognised safeguarding arrangements.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Choose suitable activity

Age limits are only one part of readiness.

  • Match bike fit, brake reach, stamina, judgement and terrain.
  • Check venue, hire, uplift and event rules for children.
  • Use shorter routes with toilets, shelter and easy exits.

Use safe organisations

Clubs and coaches should explain safeguarding arrangements.

  • Check qualifications, insurance, codes of conduct and photography policy.
  • Understand collection, supervision and emergency-contact procedures.
  • Report concerns through the organisation’s safeguarding route.

Respect the young rider

Progress must not be coerced.

  • Ask before physical assistance or filming.
  • Never shame walking, fear or a request to finish.
  • Teach how to seek help, identify the group and wait safely at junctions.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
