Mountain biking in Belfast & Armagh

Belfast and Armagh brings together urban practice areas, lakeside cycling and a managed forest network. Billy Neill Country Park supplies compact skills riding near Dundonald; Craigavon Lakes offers a longer loop from a leisure-centre hub; Gosford Forest Park provides green and blue woodland choices near Markethill. Barnett Demesne remains part of the region’s outdoor landscape, but its mountain-bike trails and jumps park are currently closed. Build the riding itinerary around the other destinations rather than treating the closed Belfast facility as an available first-day session.

Billy Neill Country Park has a published total of 2.2 km of cycle trails and a 180 m pump track. Those figures describe the park network and a practice facility, not a named graded cross-country loop. Its skills course includes boardwalk, bends, small jumps and berms, with no verified colour grade. This makes a useful focused day when riders want short turns and repeated practice, while companions enjoy the wider park. Pick individual features according to experience and give the group permission to finish before fatigue spoils a productive session.

Craigavon Lakes changes the emphasis to a sustained loop. The council publishes the mountain-bike route at 10.6 km, starting and finishing at South Lake Leisure Centre. Mostly purpose-built singletrack connects with wider tarmac, with roots, rocks and tight corners that require attention despite the lakeside setting. The wider park paths offer a simpler three-mile outing around both lakes, and the pump track provides another short-session option. Compare those activities by terrain and the group’s confidence rather than assigning an unsupported colour grade to the mountain-bike circuit.

Gosford’s official map and visitor information support green family and blue forest riding, alongside technical alternatives, a skills loop and pump track. They do not provide a sufficiently consistent current loop distance for a precise kilometre promise. Choose an appropriate signed route and leave time to understand its return. A small section is currently closed for resurfacing, with diversions, and entrance-barrier works began on 5 October 2026 while the park stays open. Those changes affect the arrival and route plan rather than turning the whole destination into a closed forest.

Barnett Demesne is a separate walking and city-day choice while the riding closure remains. Its installed network includes a 3.5 km green and a 3.9 km blue with red options, but those are future riding choices, not available substitutes for the closed jumps. The estate’s 2.4 km walking route, gardens and arboretum provide another reason to visit Belfast. For a three-day cycling programme, give Billy Neill, Craigavon and Gosford one day each. Sugar Rays in Dundonald, Café incredABLE at South Lake and Uluru in Armagh offer named meal stops, while Castle Espie, Tannaghmore Gardens and Armagh Planetarium give companions distinct activities. Check current official notices once before confirming the regional riding programme.

Where to base yourself

Use Belfast or Dundonald for a Billy Neill and city-focused visit, compare Craigavon or Portadown for the lakes, and investigate Armagh or Markethill for Gosford. Match the overnight location to the centre where you intend to spend most time instead of adding a daily transfer simply to tick off every venue.

Ask about bike storage before booking and choose meal times that work for a mixed group. Sugar Rays provides a Dundonald restaurant option; Café incredABLE sits at South Lake Leisure Centre; Uluru is an Armagh meal venue. Planetarium shows and Castle Espie visits have their own admission or booking arrangements, so give companions a complete independent plan.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN

A suggested riding trip

Day 1

A compact Billy Neill practice day

Use the park’s marked cycle choices, pump track and suitable skills features for short sessions. Meet companions for a Dundonald meal, or let their day focus on a separately planned Castle Espie visit.

Day 2

Choose the Craigavon Lakes outing

Ride the 10.6 km mountain-bike loop if its narrow sections suit the group, or choose the simpler lakeside paths. Meet at South Lake Leisure Centre and leave time for Tannaghmore Gardens and Animal Farm.

Day 3

Forest riding and Armagh activities

Choose Gosford’s signed green or blue riding with the available diversion, then make Armagh the meal base. Companions can plan the Astropark or a pre-booked Planetarium show as their separate outing.

Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
