PLAN A TRIP

Choosing the right trail

Compare grade, distance, climbing, surface, remoteness and facilities before committing a rider or group.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Match the rider

Recent evidence is more useful than ambition.

  • Compare current braking, cornering, fitness and experience on similar surfaces.
  • Account for injury, confidence, adaptive equipment and the least-experienced rider.
  • Use a lower first loop at an unfamiliar venue.

Read beyond colour

Grades are not perfectly consistent between operators.

  • Check distance, ascent, exposure, mandatory features and whether the route is managed or natural.
  • Look for bailout points and realistic ride time.
  • Read the operator’s own grade description and current notices.

Check the day

Suitability changes with conditions.

  • Review weather, surface, daylight, forestry work and live closures.
  • Confirm facilities, parking, booking and emergency access.
  • Keep a shorter or more durable alternative ready.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
