PLAN A TRIP
Travelling with bikes by train
Plan reservations, station access and the final trailhead connection before buying a ticket.
Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information
Check every operator
Cycle policies and reservation rules differ between train companies and services.
- Reserve a full-size bike where required and carry the confirmation.
- Check restrictions for tandems, trailers, cargo bikes and non-folding e-bikes.
- Replacement buses rarely guarantee carriage of full-size cycles.
Station reality
A booked space does not guarantee easy platform access.
- Check lifts, stairs, platform changes and planned engineering work.
- Allow time to remove luggage and identify the correct cycle-loading position.
- Never block doors, aisles, wheelchair spaces or emergency equipment.
Complete the journey
Map the station-to-trailhead leg realistically.
- Check road traffic, gradients, daylight and whether an off-road link is legally cyclable.
- Carry a compact lock for food stops and unexpected waiting.
- Save a fallback service and accommodation contact if the return train is missed.
