PLAN A TRIP

Mountain-bike bikepacking

Plan multi-day off-road journeys around legal access, load handling, resupply, weather and overnight permission.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Design the journey

Daily distance must reflect loaded speed and technical terrain.

  • Verify cycling access and lawful overnight arrangements for every stage.
  • Map food, water, charging, shelter and transport bailouts.
  • Leave time for mechanicals, navigation and deteriorating weather.

Pack deliberately

Keep weight secure, balanced and clear of controls and tyres.

  • Prioritise shelter, warmth, navigation, repair, first aid, food and water treatment.
  • Protect bags from tyre rub and test them through full suspension travel.
  • Do not overload carbon parts, racks or attachment points beyond stated limits.

Leave a lighter trace

Overnight travel increases responsibility.

  • Use established sites or obtain landowner permission where required.
  • Carry out waste and avoid fires, trail widening and disturbance.
  • Change plans early when surfaces are vulnerable or access notices change.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
