PLAN A TRIP
GPS devices and phone navigation
Prepare devices, maps, mounts and power so navigation remains useful when weather, signal or hardware fails.

Prepare the map
Download enough surrounding detail to recover from a wrong turn.
- Verify route direction, map date and legal access before syncing.
- Store the trailhead, escape routes and emergency grid references.
- Test offline behaviour with mobile data disabled.
Mount and power
A device must survive vibration without obstructing control.
- Use a secure approved mount and optional tether.
- Keep cables clear of steering, brakes and suspension.
- Carry realistic battery reserve protected from water and cold.
Have a fallback
Screens can break or become unreadable.
- Carry paper mapping and a compass on remote routes where appropriate.
- Know how to obtain and communicate a grid reference.
- Stop to navigate rather than manipulating a screen while moving.
