PLAN A TRIP

Mountain-bike events and racing

Understand cross-country, downhill and enduro formats before entering a first event.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Know the format

The physical and technical demands differ sharply.

  • Cross-country rewards pacing and climbing as well as trail skill.
  • Downhill times individual descents and requires venue-specific protection and practice.
  • Enduro links timed descents with untimed but time-limited transitions.

Read the entry rules

Do not assume ordinary trail access rules apply.

  • Check licence, age category, equipment, protection and course-practice requirements.
  • Understand cancellation, transfer and medical declaration terms.
  • Book accommodation and transport around registration and briefing times.

First-event plan

Arrive with a serviced familiar bike.

  • Practise eating, drinking and pacing before race day.
  • Carry permitted spares and know where outside assistance is allowed.
  • Ride predictably, follow marshals and report incidents promptly.

Useful official guidance

Rules, conditions and services change. Use these sources and the relevant venue’s current information before relying on a plan.
