Mountain-bike events and racing
Understand cross-country, downhill and enduro formats before entering a first event.
Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information
Know the format
The physical and technical demands differ sharply.
- Cross-country rewards pacing and climbing as well as trail skill.
- Downhill times individual descents and requires venue-specific protection and practice.
- Enduro links timed descents with untimed but time-limited transitions.
Read the entry rules
Do not assume ordinary trail access rules apply.
- Check licence, age category, equipment, protection and course-practice requirements.
- Understand cancellation, transfer and medical declaration terms.
- Book accommodation and transport around registration and briefing times.
First-event plan
Arrive with a serviced familiar bike.
- Practise eating, drinking and pacing before race day.
- Carry permitted spares and know where outside assistance is allowed.
- Ride predictably, follow marshals and report incidents promptly.
