Pedals and footwear

Choose flat or clip-in systems around control, terrain and experience, then practise safe entry and release.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Flat pedals

Good pins and suitable rubber improve connection.

  • Use shoes with supportive soles and tread suitable for walking the trail.
  • Keep shins clear when repositioning feet and consider appropriate protection.
  • Replace damaged pins and stop using cracked pedal bodies or bent axles.

Clip-in pedals

Practise release away from traffic and technical terrain.

  • Set cleat position and release tension conservatively using maker instructions.
  • Check cleat bolts and shoe wear regularly.
  • Unclip early when approaching uncertain stops or technical walking sections.

Wet and cold

Mud and temperature change performance.

  • Clear packed mud before relying on clip engagement.
  • Choose footwear that preserves circulation and brake control.
  • Carry dry socks or overshoes when cold, wet feet could end the ride.
