Core kit
Most rides need puncture and basic fastener support.
- Carry a pump, compatible tube, tyre lever, repair plugs where relevant and a tyre boot.
- Use a multi-tool with the exact hex, Torx and chain functions your bike needs.
- Include a compatible quick link and any required wheel-removal tool.
Scale for remoteness
Consequences change with distance from help.
- Add a spare hanger, brake pads, cable ties, tape and emergency insulation where justified.
- Distribute critical group spares instead of assuming one rider carries everything.
- Keep first-aid and repair items separate and easy to reach.
Practise
Trailside is a poor place to learn under pressure.
- Fit a tube, use a plug and repair a chain at home.
- Check consumables after every use and replace expired items.
- Know which failures require walking out rather than a temporary repair.
