Scotland · REGIONAL RIDING GUIDE
Dumfries & Galloway rewards a trip organised around contrasting forest experiences rather than a race to collect five 7stanes centres. Kirroughtree 7stanes and Glentrool 7stanes make a western pairing around Newton Stewart. Ae 7stanes, Mabie 7stanes and Dalbeattie 7stanes supply an eastern selection for a Dumfries or Dalbeattie base. Each has easier riding, but the progression towards harder trails differs: granite at Dalbeattie, extended technical singletrack at Kirroughtree, and a choice of cross-country or specialist downhill at Ae.
Kirroughtree begins with the 6 km green Bargaly Wood route, which includes quiet public roads as well as woodland tracks. The 10 km blue Larg Hill introduces winding singletrack and small rock drops, with a current diversion at markers 9–10. The 17 km red The Twister asks for sustained concentration through rock steps and drops. Black Craigs adds a 14 km black section to The Twister for a combined 31 km outing, including McMoab’s granite slabs. Plan the combined distance for that advanced day rather than treating the black section as a standalone car-park loop.
Glentrool offers a different emphasis. The green 6 km The Glen follows Palnagashel Glen, while the blue 9 km The Green Torr climbs towards views of Loch Trool before descending to the hub. The Big Country Route is a 58 km circuit on forest roads and minor public roads, with no technical singletrack. It remains a substantial physical day because broad surfaces do not remove climbing, distance or the need to carry food. Choose it for a long landscape ride, and keep a shorter Glen day available for companions who want more time near the visitor hub.
In the east, Mabie’s Big Views Green Loop is 8 km and its Viewpoint Blue Loop 10 km. The Phoenix Red Trail is a 19 km woodland circuit with rocky obstacles and tight berms. Woodhead Blue Loop is closed during harvesting, and portable toilets replace the demolished toilet block. Dalbeattie’s 11.5 km green Ironhash Trail and 14 km blue Moyle Hill Trail offer progressively more involvement with the terrain; 4 km blue and red taster loops make shorter technical choices. The 25 km red Hardrock Trail has optional black features and current windblow diversions, while Ironhash is diverted at Cloak Cut.
Ae Valley Green Route is 9 km, Craigshiels Blue Route 13.5 km and Ae Line Red Route 24 km; all currently have diversions. The red Shredder and extreme Ae Downhill instead support a dedicated downhill day. Ae’s café is closed, so carry lunch and plan refreshments independently. Pick one cluster for two days, then use a third to repeat a favourite or add a genuinely different riding experience. Check current official notices for the forests chosen for your regional trip.

Newton Stewart is a useful western base: the Crown Hotel offers a restaurant for a Kirroughtree return, while Creebridge House Hotel provides a bar and brasserie option after Glentrool. Book food around the full riding day; Big Country needs a different finish-time allowance from a short green loop.
Dumfries works for an eastern programme including Ae and Mabie, while Dalbeattie keeps its granite riding near the town. Mabie House offers food close to its forest, and the Globe Inn provides a Dumfries meal option. For non-riders, the Robert Burns Centre gives a town museum visit; Mabie’s Orchard walk provides a shorter woodland outing.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN
Use the skills area and choose Bargaly Wood, diverted Larg Hill or The Twister according to the group. Experienced black-route riders should budget for the combined 31 km outing. Regroup for an evening in Newton Stewart.
Choose The Glen or The Green Torr for a local forest outing. Make Big Country the sole riding objective if the group wants the long forest-and-public-road circuit, with provisions for the complete day.
Move the base as appropriate and choose one centre: Mabie for green, blue or Phoenix woodland riding, Dalbeattie for a suitable granite circuit, or Ae for cross-country or a separately booked downhill session. Let that choice determine the day rather than visiting all three.
Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
