Scotland · REGIONAL RIDING GUIDE
Highlands & Lochaber is a touring region with two different trip shapes. Fort William supplies the western mountain-resort day at Nevis Range. Learnie Red Rocks, Highland Wildcat and Balblair offer northern forest and hillside riding with coastal or village bases. Choose one of those shapes for a short break rather than treating every location as a neighbouring trailhead. The contrast is useful: a gondola descent, a compact handling session and a community-maintained hill circuit can each become the centre of a trip, but they need different equipment, logistics and expectations.
At Fort William, Nevis Range combines gondola-accessed trails with a lower forest network. Blue Doon is the intermediate mountain descent; black Top Chief brings rock slabs, drops and boardwalks, while the orange World Cup Track is the expert race-track choice. Lower down, Blue Adder and Voodoo offer blue riding, and red Wild Goat adds a more energetic bermed descent. Current information reports possible lower-trail damage under assessment. The October 2026 bike uplift operates at weekends and is scheduled to finish on 18 October, so a mountain-uplift holiday has a narrower calendar than simply arriving in Fort William with bikes.
Learnie Red Rocks suits a smaller session on the Black Isle, with the green 0.5 km Learnie Home Run and blue sections such as the 1.1 km Muirhead Climb and 2 km Firth View Blue. These are individual section measurements, not complete car-park circuits. Callachy Hill Climb and Callachy Red Rocks are closed for felling from 21 September 2026 until the end of February 2027. Learnie Hill Trail is separately closed without a reopening date. Do not plan Callachy Blue Downhill as an assured alternative: its usual access climb is closed even though the downhill has no separate closure label.
Highland Wildcat at Golspie offers the northern trip a fuller hill outing. The 0.9 km Pict’s Path gives families a modest introduction, while the Blue Trail is 6.5 km and Red Trail 7.5 km. The 13.6 km Black Trail descends from Ben Bhraggie across open moorland and into forest, returning through red sections. Its narrow singletrack and rock features require expert handling as well as fitness. A Golspie base can combine that ride with a village meal or a separate Big Burn Gorge walk, making the location useful for companions who want more than cycling.
Balblair has a twisting 3.2 km Blue Trail and a published 7.2 km black route. The black is diverted around closed Candy Mountain, Loopy Loo and Slab & Tickle sections, and listed works from 31 August to 1 November can cause rolling partial or full closures across the site. Bonar Bridge and Ardgay provide a practical local base, but the works make Balblair an optional addition rather than the guaranteed anchor of a northern holiday. Check current official notices and operator schedules before fixing the region’s riding days.
LOCATOR MAP
North is at the top. Pins show the trail area or nearby planning base, not a route or emergency-navigation map.
Planning coordinates combine official operator, council and land-manager sources with earlier OpenStreetMap place matching (ODbL). Pins show approximate areas or nearby bases. Use official arrival directions.

Use Fort William for a Nevis Range-centred break. The Ben Nevis Inn provides a named meal option away from the resort, while the West Highland Museum gives companions a town visit. Bike hire is directed to Nevis Cycles in Inverlochy, so arrange collection and transport separately from a gondola booking.
For the northern centres, Rosemarkie suits Learnie, with Crofters on the beachfront and Groam House Museum as a separate activity. Golspie has the Golspie Inn and Big Burn Gorge for a Wildcat stay. Bonar Bridge or Ardgay suits a Balblair addition; The Pier in Lairg is a separate food trip rather than a trailhead café.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN
Build a modest session around Learnie Home Run and available blue sections, using the signed connections. Keep section lengths distinct from the distance of your whole ride, then spend time in Rosemarkie.
Choose Pict’s Path, blue, red or the expert black according to the group. A Golspie meal and a separate Big Burn Gorge walk can complete the day without requiring everyone to attempt the summit descent.
Another Wildcat ride provides a straightforward third day. Balblair can instead supply a short blue outing or the diverted expert route when the working site permits access; keep the day flexible around the northern base.
Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
