Access note: Autumn bike uplift runs at weekends only, with the final 2026 uplift planned for Sunday 18 October, weather permitting. The operator is advertising a £10 end-of-season ticket for that Sunday. Lower Witch’s Trails remain available year-round; use the daily Mountain Report for individual track status.
Fort William puts very different riding days within reach of the same Highland base. At Nevis Range, a gondola carries bikes onto Aonach Mòr for substantial descents, while the lower forest network offers routes you can reach by pedalling. Decide which day you want before booking: a lift ticket, a suitable bike and confidence on sustained downhill terrain matter more here than simply choosing a colour on a map.
Leanachan also gives this destination a broader identity than its famous race track. Forestry and Land Scotland describes an extensive forest-road network beneath the mountains, useful when your group wants a less technical outing. Treat those roads as a separate ride with its own navigation plan. A forest spin and a gondola descent require different equipment decisions, and neither automatically guarantees access to the other.

Blue Doon
Blue
The gondola-accessed intermediate option begins on the open hillside before entering forest and joining the lower network. Choose it for a sustained descent rather than assuming blue means a short warm-up near the car park. Leave yourself concentration for the final sections.
Rock slabs, drops and boardwalks make this an experienced rider’s choice. Its technical character is different from flowing blue riding; commit only when you can assess those features independently and control speed without relying on the rider ahead.
The expert downhill route is the demanding race-track option on the uplift network. This is a sensible target for riders already comfortable with rough, sustained downhill runs, rather than a compulsory stop on a first visit.
Tight turns, berms and rollers offer a lower-network introduction. Use the first lap to establish how much speed the corners need before treating repeated laps as practice.
Forest singletrack leads into more open berms. It provides another useful lower-trail progression option without buying a gondola ticket merely to find an approachable starting point.
Fast berms give this lower trail a more energetic feel. The optional connection to the World Cup 4X track is a separate decision; follow the appropriate signed line rather than drifting into bigger features.
Start around the pump track and skills loops, then choose lower blue trails to settle your braking and cornering. This makes the base area a useful assessment point for a mixed group. Riders who are tired, uncertain about their equipment or unfamiliar with long descents can have a worthwhile session without immediately heading up the mountain.
Experienced visitors can organise a gondola day around Blue Doon, Top Chief and the World Cup Track, allowing a reconnaissance run before chasing repeat laps. Complete the required bike participation form when arranging uplift; a parent or guardian must complete the form for under-16s. The operator requires helmets and strongly recommends full-face protection and body armour. Build those requirements into your packing and hire arrangements.

Nevis Range is at Torlundy, approximately seven miles north of Fort William, off the A82. Use the resort’s actual map destination rather than relying solely on postcode PH33 6SQ. Current day parking is £6, with payment machines accepting cash and cards; a short pickup or drop-off allowance is separate. Keep parking payment and uplift booking as two distinct parts of your arrival plan.
Shiel Buses lists route N41 between Fort William, Nevis Range and Roy Bridge, with separate weekday and weekend timetables. It offers a public-transport connection to the resort, but check your intended departure and return together. Ask the operator about bicycle carriage before combining the bus with your own bike; a passenger timetable alone does not establish space for a mountain bike.
The Trails End Café & Bar is at the resort base, making it the straightforward meeting point for riders and companions after different-length sessions. The lower-trail information also lists a bike wash behind the gondola base station and a workshop. Arrange any essential repair in advance rather than making a booked uplift day depend on an immediate mechanic appointment.
The current dedicated hire page directs visitors to Nevis Cycles in Inverlochy, Fort William, rather than promising collection beside the gondola. Contact the shop to specify your intended route and confirm a suitable bike, transport and return arrangements. Rental availability by itself does not establish permission or suitability for every uplift track; settle those questions before paying for your riding day.

Read the current mountain report for bike uplift and weather restrictions before travelling. Gondola bike uplift is seasonal, while the lower forest trails have separate access conditions.
The lower Witches network is described by the operator as available throughout the year, while gondola biking has a seasonal schedule. In October 2026 uplift is running at weekends and is scheduled to finish on 18 October 2026. Those dates describe that season only. Exposed hillside riding and wooded lower trails create different weather experiences; pack for the descent from the mountain, not just conditions beside the café.
Camping and places to stay near Nevis Range (Fort William)
A base in Fort William
Fort William makes a practical base when different members of the party want different days out. For a meal away from the resort, the Ben Nevis Inn at Achintee publishes lunch, evening and children’s menus and recommends reservations. Decide your meal time before committing to another lap, especially if you are meeting non-riders rather than travelling as one group.
The West Highland Museum in Cameron Square provides a town-centre alternative when riding finishes early. Admission is free with donations welcomed; its published visiting pattern is Monday to Saturday, 10am–4pm, with Sunday closed. Allow this to be a planned part of a mixed holiday rather than assuming every indoor attraction is available after an evening ride.

RIDE PREPARATION
Kit for this ride
Consider what suits the route, forecast and your own experience.
Do I need gondola uplift for all Fort William riding?
No. Nevis Range separates gondola descents from its lower trails, and Leanachan has forest roads for a different kind of outing. Choose the appropriate route and access plan before purchasing a ticket.
Is Blue Doon the best starting point for a complete beginner?
It is an intermediate gondola descent. Begin with the base skills facilities and lower blue options if you are still learning to control speed and corner consistently; the mountain setting makes sustained confidence important.
Can I collect a hire bike at the gondola base?
The current dedicated Nevis Range hire page directs enquiries to Nevis Cycles in Fort William. Confirm collection directly with that shop and explain whether you want forest riding or gondola descents.
Does the gondola run for bikes throughout winter?
The published 2026 bike uplift season ends on 18 October. Lower-trail access has a different pattern. Do not plan a winter gondola biking day from the resort’s general sightseeing or snowsports operation.
What can a non-riding companion do in town?
The West Highland Museum offers a free indoor visit in central Fort William, subject to its opening days. It pairs well with a town meal while riders spend part of the day at Nevis Range.
