Northern Ireland · REGIONAL RIDING GUIDE
Mourne and County Down brings together demanding hill riding at Rostrevor, a lake-and-forest outing at Castlewellan, and managed estate cycling at Castle Ward. The destinations answer different questions. Rostrevor suits riders seeking a substantial climb and technical descent; Castlewellan offers a gentler lake circuit alongside its harder network; Castle Ward makes sense when scenery, shared paths and shorter options are the priority. Build the trip around those differences rather than promising every rider the same level of challenge at all three places.
Rostrevor’s council-listed red route is 27 km and its black route 19 km. Bike Mourne describes its outings as 30 km and 20 km, so use the relevant route information when estimating the day. The red currently has storm-damage diversions affecting sections 22–25 and 40–44; the official status lists black open. Both involve a serious cross-country commitment above Kilbroney Valley. The black’s shorter published distance does not make it the easier option. Handling ability and the group’s endurance should decide the choice before leaving the lower park.
Rostrevor also has a separate downhill discipline. Mega Mission is a 1.7 km orange descent with large jumps and berms; On the Pulse is 1.3 km and adds boulders, drops and gap jumps. A booked uplift day belongs in an experienced downhill rider’s itinerary, with equipment and time organised for repeated gravity runs. It should not become a casual addition for companions who have just completed a first red cross-country outing. Rostrevor village makes a useful base for finishing the ride and heading out on foot for food.
Castlewellan provides a different starting point. Its 4 km green route is a wide lake circuit with a small incline on the northern side. The blue route and all black options, including Dolly’s Chute, are currently closed. The original red is published at 19 km, but only specified sections are available with diversions, so that figure is not the current ride distance. For a mixed family trip, make the green lake route the cycling plan and give the National Arboretum and Annesley Garden their own time on foot.
Castle Ward completes the contrast with shared estate routes beside Strangford Lough. The Shore Trail is 2 km and linear, the Castle Trail 3 km circular, and the Farm Trail 4 km circular. The 13 km Boundary Trail provides the longer outing over varied terrain. These are published cycling routes without a colour grade, so compare distance and character instead of assigning them a mountain-bike difficulty. A three-day programme can move from Rostrevor’s hills to Castlewellan’s lake, then finish with Castle Ward’s shore and gardens. The Rostrevor Inn, Kings Inn and The Cuan provide specific meal options around the respective bases. Consult the current official notices once before confirming the regional programme.
LOCATOR MAP
North is at the top. Pins show the trail area or nearby planning base, not a route or emergency-navigation map.
Planning coordinates combine official operator, council and land-manager sources with earlier OpenStreetMap place matching (ODbL). Pins show approximate areas or nearby bases. Use official arrival directions.

Strangford Lough, County Down
Choose Rostrevor village when Kilbroney and a downhill or demanding cross-country day are the main objective. Castlewellan town suits a forest-park stay, with the Kings Inn at Lower Square as a named meal option. Use Strangford when Castle Ward and an estate-and-shore visit are your priority.
A touring itinerary can change base between its main riding styles, or repeat the centre nearest your accommodation. Arrange secure storage and a comfortable meal time around the slower rider’s finish. For non-riders, Kilbroney’s Narnia Trail, Castlewellan’s gardens and Castle Ward’s ornamental grounds provide separate outings.

A FLEXIBLE 3-DAY PLAN
Experienced riders can make an open black cross-country outing or a diverted red ride the main event. A specialist downhill group can instead book its uplift session for the orange trails. Companions can walk the Narnia Trail and meet afterwards in Rostrevor.
Ride the 4 km green lake circuit at the group’s pace. Spend the rest of the visit on foot in the National Arboretum and Annesley Garden, then regroup for a Castlewellan meal.
Choose the 3 km Castle or 4 km Farm circuit, or make the 13 km Boundary route the longer outing. Keep cycling on the designated shared routes and arrange a garden visit separately before heading to Strangford.
Choose one main ride each day and allow time for transfers, meals and recovery.
