Introduction

Castle Ward offers a managed network of estate trails beside Strangford Lough. Woodland, rolling meadow and shoreline create a varied outing, with the historic farmyard and Audley’s Castle adding obvious places to pause. The appeal is a ride through a landscape with several different characters. You can keep close to the water or make a longer circuit through the estate, choosing a route around the group rather than expecting everyone to ride the same distance.

These are multi-use trails, so reading the map and sharing the space are central to a good visit. Walkers, wheelchair users, dogs and horses can be part of the same outing. For a mountain biker, Castle Ward works well as a relaxed exploration day or an introduction to off-road riding with family. Choose a suitable marked cycle route, leave room for unhurried stops and make the scenery part of the ride.

Shore Trail

2 km, linear

The flat shoreline route leads towards the base of Audley’s Castle. It is the sensible first choice for a short ride or a group with mixed confidence. Because the route is linear, plan the return as part of the outing and stop in a place that leaves others clear passage.

Castle Trail

3 km, circular

This short circuit explores the shore and the area around Audley’s Castle. It offers a clear next step for a group wanting more than a simple shoreline ride without undertaking the full estate boundary. Follow the designated cycling line and the waymarked direction at each junction.

Farm Trail

Green (Mountain Bike NI) · 4 km, circular

The farm circuit adds mature woodland and the farmland of West Park to the shore-side outing. It is a useful choice when the group wants a landscape change while keeping the route relatively short. Its detailed route crosses Audleystown Road in a slow zone, so dismount and take care at that crossing.

Boundary Trail

Blue (Mountain Bike NI) · 13 km, circular

The longest of these cycling choices reaches across the estate on varied terrain. It suits a rider ready for more sustained pedalling and a group able to manage a longer circuit together. Give yourself enough time to stop, navigate and use any signed diversion rather than calculating the finish solely from distance.

Best first ride

For a first visit, ask the welcome team to identify the cycling line to the Shore Trail and begin there. A flat, short option allows you to judge comfort without committing to a large loop. Keep the group close enough to communicate at junctions, but allow space for braking. If that feels enjoyable and everyone still has energy, choose one of the short circular options from the map.

For an experienced rider, the Boundary Trail makes the most of the changing estate landscape. Ride it as a steady exploration rather than a timed effort: shared junctions and people travelling at different speeds make a rigid pace inappropriate. Cyclists and walkers follow the anti-clockwise waymarkers, while horses travel clockwise. Expect an approaching horse, give it space and respect the designated slow zones.

Where is Castle Ward?

Castle Ward is reached from Strangford. Use BT30 7BA alongside the official entrance directions. Official directions →

Castle Ward is on the A25, one mile from Strangford and seven miles north-east of Downpatrick. Use BT30 7BA, then follow the property signs to the main entrance. The National Trust specifically warns that access is unavailable via Audleystown Road. There is a car park and Blue Badge parking. Check the admission arrangements for your party before planning the ride as a quick stop.

The Downpatrick–Strangford bus stops at the property gates; consult Translink for the service on your travel date. This offers a way for companions to reach the estate without taking a car, while a rider can enquire about the on-site hire fleet. Coming from Portaferry involves the ferry to Strangford. Arrange that crossing and the onward journey separately, allowing time to enter through the proper gates.

Facilities

Reception has a small fleet of adult and children’s hire bikes, with helmets included. Hire is first come, first served, and the Trust says individual bikes can occasionally be unavailable. Bring your own bike if cycling is essential to the day, or contact the team beforehand about the fleet. Hire bikes must be returned by 4.30pm. The estate also has toilets and the Stableyard tea-room, making a break straightforward without leaving the property.

Seasons and weather

Sheltered woodland and an open lough shore can feel quite different on the same ride. Carry a layer for a waterside pause even after warming up inland. In wet conditions, slow before roots and loose stones, particularly where a bend restricts your view. Autumn leaves add another reason to favour an easy first circuit. Admission and facility hours vary through the year, so plan to finish comfortably within that day’s opening window.

Camping and places to stay near Castle Ward

A base in Strangford

Strangford makes a convenient base for food after the estate. The Cuan Restaurant and Bar, at 6–12 The Square, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Its coastal menu uses local produce and seafood, with vegetarian, vegan and children’s choices also advertised. A table booked for the end of a relaxed ride gives a mixed group a clear place to regroup; allow enough time to return a hire bike first.

For a non-riding activity, explore Castle Ward’s gardens on foot. The Victorian sunken garden gives a different view of the estate from the cycling routes, while the older pleasure grounds include the pinetum and Lady Anne’s Temple overlooking Temple Water. Choose a garden visit alongside the ride if companions want a quieter afternoon. Treat these ornamental spaces as their own visit rather than assuming every garden path is part of the cycle network.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should cyclists follow?

Follow the anti-clockwise cycle waymarkers. Horses travel clockwise, and the signed slow zones require especially considerate speeds. Use the marked cycle routes and dismount at road crossings.

Can I reserve a Castle Ward hire bike?

The current arrangement is first come, first served, with no advance reservations. The fleet is small, so contact Reception if you need a particular size. There are no hire e-bikes or trailers for very young children.

Does arriving by bike avoid estate admission?

No. Normal admission applies to non-members arriving by bike or on foot as well as by car. Check current entry information and membership eligibility when organising the day.

Is the deer park diversion in place throughout the year?

The Trust describes a March–September grazing closure between map points 23 and 24. Follow any signs on your visit; that seasonal notice is not a statement that every other route is open.

What is the best short route with less confident riders?

Start with the flat, linear Shore Trail. Its shorter distance makes it easier to assess the group before choosing a circular route. Leave room for other people when turning around or stopping for lough views.
