Introduction

Castlewellan puts a forest ride beside a lake and a town, making it a useful choice when your group wants more than a single demanding mountain-bike outing. The lakeside green route provides a modest starting point, while the broader trail network was designed to offer progression. At present, however, the published closure information must shape your choice: a colour on an older map is not a promise that you can ride the corresponding loop today.

Build a visit around the riding available to your least experienced companion, then add other activities rather than pushing everyone onto a harder route. The forest park also offers walking and gardens, and Castlewellan town gives you a clear place to reunite over food. This combination is especially helpful for a family or mixed group: someone can have a satisfying short ride without committing to every kilometre that another rider wants to cover. Leave room in the plan for the park itself.

Green Trail

Green · 4 km

A wide circuit around Castlewellan Lake with a small incline on its northern side. The gentle layout is the useful choice for a first outing or younger riders building confidence.

Official route information →

Blue Trail

Blue · 4.5 km

The published loop uses elevated lakeside singletrack before joining the green return. It is currently listed closed by the council, so its map and normal distance are background information rather than a ride available to plan today.

Official route information →

Red Trail

Red · 19 km published full route

Only specified sections are available, with signed diversions. The original loop climbs behind the castle and explores higher forest; its full published distance does not describe the current diverted ride.

Official route information →

Dolly’s Chute

Black

Closed along with the other black-grade options. It should not be included in an advanced-rider itinerary while the official restriction remains in place.

Castlewellan trail map

The published trail network combines the lake loop and longer forest routes. Current black restrictions and signed diversions take precedence over historic trail maps.

Best first ride

For a new visitor, the green lake circuit is a practical first decision. Give each person time to settle into their own pace and decide whether a second lap adds anything to the day. If a child tires, a short loop is easier to manage than an ambitious progression ride. A booked mountain-bike experience at the trailside Life Adventure Centre can include a bike, helmet, accessories and an introductory overview, making equipment collection part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Experienced riders should approach the remaining red sections as a route requiring local attention, not as the familiar complete loop remembered from an earlier visit. Obtain the current guidance at the trailhead and follow the diversion signs in sequence. Do not set a target based on the old full-loop distance or use a closed link to shorten the return. If the available riding does not suit your intended training day, choose a different outing rather than trying to reconstruct the former circuit through restricted sections.

The forest park is signposted from Castlewellan’s Main Street. Access on foot or by bicycle is free; vehicle parking is charged unless an applicable permit covers the visit. The council’s parking information says daily payments are handled at the park offices, with cash and card accepted. Charges apply from 9am to 5pm. Check the current tariff for your vehicle before travelling, particularly if you are bringing a larger group in a minibus rather than an ordinary car.

Castlewellan town is a convenient meeting point when companions arrive separately. Agree whether you are meeting in town, at the park entrance or at the trailhead, because those are different stages of arrival. If collecting a hire bike, arrange the collection time around the booked session and allow for walking to the centre. Avoid basing a return journey on riding the whole red loop: diversions can alter the day you originally imagined.

Facilities

Life Adventure Centre is located trailside and offers mountain-bike experiences using hardtail or full-suspension bikes. Its packages include a route map and access to changing and showering facilities. Confirm the package that fits your needs, especially if some of the group bring their own bikes. Those centre facilities are part of the offered experience, so ask about access rather than assuming every visitor automatically has the same arrangement.

The same operator offers electric-bike experiences at Castlewellan. Discuss both bike choice and the riding currently available when booking: assistance helps with pedalling but does not reopen a closed route or remove the need to control a descent. The pump track beside the trailhead gives a contained place to practise. Use it at an appropriate pace and give younger riders room instead of treating a shared practice session as a race.

Opening times and prices

Entry on foot or by bicycle is free; vehicle parking is charged. Daily parking payments are made at the park office by cash or card, with charges applying 9am–5pm. Current trail diversions remain in force.

Seasons and weather

Park access hours shorten through autumn and winter. The current parking guidance lists March and October at 9am–6pm, and November to February at 9am–5pm; the trail listing also identifies Christmas Day as closed. Put riding and equipment return comfortably inside those limits. The woodland’s mix of broadleaved and coniferous trees makes autumn an attractive time for a slower visit, but leaves can obscure the surface beneath them. Take a cautious first lap and reserve some daylight for a walk or town stop.

A base in Castlewellan

Castlewellan itself is the straightforward base for a meal after the park. The Kings Inn at Lower Square offers bar food and Fi Fi’s restaurant, giving you a named option without needing another drive into the countryside. Check food service and book for a group, particularly if riding companions will finish at different times. A town meal makes a useful finish for people who chose a lake loop and those who spent longer on the available trails: everyone can discuss the day without needing another shared descent.

For a non-riding visit, explore the National Arboretum and Annesley Garden within the forest park. NI Direct describes a walled garden with ponds, fountains and ornamental greenhouses, alongside the wider collection of trees and shrubs. Allow it its own time rather than treating it as a hurried detour while waiting for a rider. It is an alternative focus for a rest day or a companion who prefers walking, with access through the park and published opening from 10am to sunset.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride the blue or black routes now?

No. The council’s current visitor page lists Blue Trail and all black options closed. Red Trail is only partly open with diversions. Follow the current signed available routes and do not use a closed section to connect a loop.

Is the red trail still a complete 19-kilometre loop?

No. Partial opening and diversions are in place. The 19-kilometre figure describes the original circuit; follow the signed instructions for the ride currently available.

Do I need to pay to enter on my bike?

Park access on foot or by bicycle is free. Vehicle parking has a separate charging and permit system, and a hire or activity booking should be checked for its own inclusions.

Can I book a bike and somewhere to change?

Life Adventure Centre’s mountain-bike packages include equipment and use of its changing and showering facilities. Confirm the current package and collection details with the centre before travelling.
