Mountain-bike cleaning and routine maintenance

Remove damaging dirt without forcing water into bearings, then inspect the bike while it is clean.

Reviewed · General UK planning guidance · Check current operator and manufacturer information

Wash gently

Let water and cleaner loosen dirt before brushing.

  • Avoid directing high-pressure water at bearings, seals, suspension or electrical parts.
  • Use bike-safe cleaner and separate brushes for drivetrain and braking surfaces.
  • Keep lubricant and polish away from pads and rotors.

Dry and lubricate

Do not leave a wet bike in an unventilated space.

  • Dry the chain, apply suitable lubricant sparingly and wipe away excess.
  • Compress suspension and wipe clean around seals without introducing contaminants.
  • Charge and store e-bike batteries only as the manufacturer directs.

Inspect

Cleaning reveals developing faults.

  • Check tyre damage, spoke tension, pad life, loose hardware and frame marks.
  • Listen for new creaks and feel for bearing play.
  • Book repairs before the next technical ride rather than at the trailhead.
