The Bike Hub beside the Visitor Centre supplies hire and route advice, while the descending skills tracks are reached from Nantgwyllt Church car park. Those tracks serve intermediate and experienced mountain bikers, with berms, jumps and drops. The wider named routes are a separate choice involving distance, navigation and changing terrain. For a first visit with novice cyclists, start with a manageable section of the Elan Trail and turn back while everyone still has energy. Its linear shape gives you control over the day’s length, but remember that the return distance is part of the ride. Ask the Bike Hub about suitable hire and route choices. The advertised electric hire bikes are trail bicycles for roads and light off-road use, specifically not mountain bikes for technical routes.
Experienced mountain bikers can begin with Around Caban to learn the local riding character, then plan Black Cottage or Elan Epic as a larger objective. The centre café is convenient for an on-site break, but do not build a long black-route plan around reaching it at the final moment. Bring enough food for the ride and make the café or pub stop a comfortable finish.
Non-riders can visit the Visitor Centre exhibition to learn about the valley before exploring the dams. Welsh Water also shows a fifteen-minute film about the landscape, dam history and Celtic rainforest in the exhibition. That makes a useful indoor activity while companions cycle, or a shared introduction before everyone chooses their own outing. A reservoir-side walk provides another way to see the setting without attempting a mountain-bike skills track.
