Access note: The original visitor-centre café and shop are no longer operating. NRW aims to reopen the centre for the 2027 visitor season once agreements are in place and new operators are ready. A temporary unit serves drinks and cold food; check NRW for its current hours. Summit and Syfydrin have a minor diversion. Trails, parking, toilets and red-kite feeding continue.

Introduction

Bwlch Nant yr Arian combines flowing forest singletrack with a more open Mid Wales riding landscape east of Aberystwyth. You can choose a short blue session, a red circuit or a much longer black excursion, all from the main parking area. The choices are different enough that a mixed group should agree the intended ride before setting out, rather than assuming everybody will be happy on the longest loop.

This is also a place to watch red kites and explore on foot, making it useful for a weekend with non-riding companions. The visitor-centre name can suggest more indoor services than are currently available: the permanent café and shop have closed. Plan your ride and refreshments around the outdoor facilities, then use Aberystwyth as a town base if you want a restaurant evening or an indoor activity the following day.

Bwlch Nant yr Arian mountain bike trails and grades

Arian Trail

Forest road and similar · 7.9 km · 160 m

The family-oriented forest-road circuit goes to Blaenmelindwr lake, with no singletrack sections. A public-road section and a short steeper return climb mean it still needs attentive riding. Choose it when broad tracks fit the group better than a graded singletrack outing.

Official route information →

Melindwr Trail

Blue: Moderate · 1.85 km loop 1; 5 km both loops · 75 m loop 1; 110 m both loops

Use the shorter first loop for a focused blue outing, or combine both loops for more flowing descents and berms. Melindwr is aimed at riders already competent on blue who want to develop their handling before progressing to red.

Official route information →

Pendam Trail

Red: Difficult · 10.2 km · 200 m

The shorter red combines sections including Italian Job, Hippity Hop and High as a Kite. It gives confident riders a singletrack outing without committing to Summit’s longer distance. Its relatively shorter climbs still belong to a difficult-grade circuit.

Official route information →

Summit Trail

Red: Difficult · 18.5 km · 440 m

The longer red moves from forest onto exposed moorland. Mark of Zorro provides a substantial descent before the Leg Burner climb. Choose this when the group wants a more sustained pedal with a margin for weather and the currently signed minor diversion.

Official route information →

Syfydrin Trail

Black: Severe · 36 km · 750 m

Syfydrin includes Summit and extends into high, remote countryside. Technical doubletrack is shared with other users, including vehicles and horses. The distance and exposure make this a bigger undertaking than simply adding a harder descent to a red lap; a minor diversion is currently in place.

NRW publishes separate downloadable trail cards for Arian, Melindwr, Pendam, Summit and Syfydrin. Choose the intended circuit and follow its current diversion.

Best first ride

For a first singletrack visit, riders already comfortable on blue should choose Melindwr and decide after the first loop whether to add the second. A group wanting broad forest roads can choose Arian instead, while accepting its public-road section. Those are different outings: the forest-road grade should not be relabelled green simply to make the comparison easier.

Confident red riders can make Pendam their introduction, then reserve Summit for a day when they want more climbing and exposed terrain. Choose Syfydrin only when everyone is prepared for a long remote ride. Carry the route information and plan a return time together; a black excursion is a poor compromise if part of the group expected a short trail-centre lap.

Where is Bwlch Nant yr Arian?

Bwlch Nant yr Arian is reached from near Aberystwyth. Use SY23 3AB alongside the official entrance directions. Official directions →

Take the A44 east from Aberystwyth towards Llangurig; the car park is signposted on the left about nine miles from town. SY23 3AB covers a wider area, so use the signed entrance or the official map pin rather than stopping wherever the postcode directs you. Aberystwyth is the nearest mainline railway station. NRW identifies the X47 towards Llanidloes as stopping on request at the entrance; confirm the current journey and bicycle arrangements before travelling.

Parking is £7 for up to four hours or £12 for the day. Payment at the machine is contactless, not cash, with RingGo alternatives available. Allow enough parking time for your whole visit, including a skills session or kite watching after the ride. Overnight parking is prohibited. Blue Badge holders must register their vehicle for free parking as well as display the badge.

Facilities

Parc Sgiliau is the purpose-built skills track, with rollers, berms, tabletops and other practice features. Use it for an appropriate warm-up rather than assuming the longest route is the best way to begin. NRW also lists a bike wash. With the permanent café and shop closed, the current provision includes portable toilets and the temporary Consti drinks and cold-food unit, with its current service hours published by NRW.

The visitor centre is unstaffed and has no first-aid provision. Pack your own essentials and agree how the group will respond to a mechanical problem or injury before leaving the parking area. A food unit is useful for refreshments, but it does not replace a repair shop or a staffed reception that can solve problems while you are out on the remote route.

Opening times and prices

The forest trails are open all year, subject to diversions. Parking costs £7 for four hours or £12 all day; portable toilets remain available while the permanent café and shop are closed.

Seasons and weather

The forest and trails are open throughout the year, subject to closures and diversions. On exposed Summit and Syfydrin sections, choose the day’s objective around wind and visibility as well as distance. A shorter Pendam ride can be a more satisfying plan than struggling to complete the remote black merely because you have travelled to Mid Wales.

NRW warns that snow, ice and high winds can close the parking area and facilities at short notice, and trails are not treated for ice. In those conditions, keep an Aberystwyth activity available as an alternative. Follow the signed minor diversions on Summit and Syfydrin rather than forcing a downloaded track through a closed connection.

Camping and places to stay near Bwlch Nant yr Arian

A base in Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth makes a practical base for combining the trails with a town evening. Baravin on the promenade serves seafood, pizza, pasta and burgers, alongside craft beer, cocktails and wine. Book a table around the group’s return rather than adding pressure to finish an exposed route quickly. The waterfront setting gives non-riding companions a place to meet after their own day out.

The National Library of Wales offers free exhibitions in Aberystwyth, including displays drawn from its collections and changing gallery programmes. It is a useful indoor choice for a non-riding day; exhibition hours can differ from the building’s general opening hours. At Nant yr Arian itself, red-kite feeding takes place daily at 2pm and is free to watch. Arrange that around your ride rather than rushing back from Syfydrin to meet a fixed viewing time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Arian a green singletrack route?

No. NRW grades it forest road and similar. It has no singletrack and includes a public-road section, so it needs a different expectation from Melindwr’s blue loops.

Which red is the shorter outing?

Pendam is 10.2 km with 200 m of published climbing; Summit is 18.5 km with 440 m. Choose the ride your group can comfortably complete.

Can I rely on the visitor-centre café?

The permanent café and shop have closed. A hot-drink and cold-food unit is listed in the car park; bring your own ride supplies.

Are Summit and Syfydrin on their usual lines?

NRW currently lists minor diversions on both routes. Follow the signed alternatives.

When can I watch the red kites?

Feeding is listed daily at 2pm beside the lake. Watching is free, although vehicle parking is charged separately.
